5 Gluttony (Self-Control) Missions Month Late-Start support a couple working in Central Asia providing community development support. In the process they support local Christians and equip them to share their hope. Thank God for the real difference their work is making in improving farming techniques, improving health skills and equipping local church leaders. Ask for ongoing growth in the local churches and for wisdom as they care for their family.

Getting Started 1. Which would you struggle most to say no to: another Tim Tam, going to coffee with friends when you should be working, or staying up when you should be going to bed?

Read Luke 15:11–32. 2. What did the son see as the ‘good life’ and what does it tell us about our sin?

3. What are we shown about God’s mercy?

Digging Deeper Read Amos 6:1–7. 4. When we read 1 and 2 Kings it seems Israel’s exile is caused by the kings’ failure. But how does this passage place responsibility on the people of Israel?

5. Why does gluttony affect our relationship with God? Why does it affect our relationship with others?

2

Read 1 Peter 4:1–5. 6. How is gluttony opposed to the cross and why should we turn away from it?

7. The opposite of gluttony appears to be self-control (eg. Galatians 5:19–24). How does what God has done lead to self-control?

Ideas to action 8. Where does gluttony prevent you from serving God? from serving others?

9. How might Christian self-control look similar to non-Christian self-control? How might it look different?
