SEW CONTEMPO CLASS SCHEDULE JAN-APR 2014 SEWING CLASSES LEARN TO SEW Instructor: Ruth Droll This class introduces beginners to the basics of sewing: using the sewing machine, sewing terms, cutting, marking, pressing and using tools and notions. Projects include: placemats, napkins, aprons, and tote bags. INTERMEDIATE SEWING – PAJAMA PANTS & PILLOWCASE Instructor: Ruth Droll Learn basic sewing techniques while constructing a pair of Pajama pants with an elastic waistband. You will learn how to take body measurements, choose your correct pattern size, read a pattern, choose fabric, lay out the pattern and assemble a simple garment. Also, learn a quick technique to make a great looking pillowcase. Prerequisite: Beginning Sewing. Three 3-hour classes. $55 Wednesdays, Feb 12, 19, 26 5:30 – 8:30pm
BEGINNING SMOCKING Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Learn the basic smocking stitches on a pleated sample and apply what you learn to a cute little sundress. We will cover how to read smocking plates and designs and apply the information to this first project. You will receive a pleated sample, practice floss, and your dress will be pleated for free. Two 3-hour classes. $65 Mondays, Feb 10, 17 9:30am – 12:30pm
PICTURE SMOCKING Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Learn to smock those cute little pictures that the boys and girls like so much. All aspects from floss, needles and fabric will be covered in this one time class. Pleated fabric and plate or smocking design included. One 3-hour classes. $45 Monday, Mar 3 9:30am – 12:30pm
ADDING SMOCKING TO ANY PATTERN Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Well…almost anything! We will first cover how to add a few pleats to many commercial patterns. Secondly, a little smocked box added to a t-shirt or other garment will be demonstrated. Lastly, you will make a little smocked pocket. Pattern and instructions for the pocket are included with the class. You will be surprised how much you can do with a little bit of smocking. One 3-hour class. $45 Tuesday, Mar 11 9:30am-12:30pm
THE SMOCKED BISHOP Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Come learn how to make a smocked bishop dress. You will be provided with a pattern for an 18” doll. If you would prefer to smock a bishop dress for a child, you will need to purchase a pattern such as the Chery Williams pattern. Two 3-hour classes. $45 Tuesdays, Mar 18, Apr 1 9:30am-12:30pm
EASY ZIPPERS (Islander Sewing Systems) Instructor: Barbara Cruse Put the ZIP in zippers with these fast and easy methods to insert any machine stitched zipper. Barbara will take you step-by-step through five different zipper techniques, all without pins or basting. One 6-hour class. $55 Saturday, Feb 15 10am-4pm
INDUSTRIAL SHORTCUTS (Islander Sewing Systems) Instructor: Barbara Cruse Come and learn the secrets of professional, industry sewers. The Islander Sewing System is designed from the sewing industry for the home sewers. Whether you make garments or are a quilter, these techniques will greatly help you. BERNINA FOOT CLASS – Applique Techniques Instructor: Ruth Droll This workbook class is designed to help familiarize you with some of the many BERNINA presser feet. Presser feet help you to sew better, improve sewing skills, faster sewing, quicker results and professional-looking projects and offers more creative options. The focus of this class is on appliqué methods: Blanket Stitch, Satin Stitch and Raw-Edge Invisible Applique. This class is for all BERNINA machine models. One 3-hour class. $25 plus kit fee of $5. QUILTING CLASSES LEARN TO QUILT Instructor: Sharon Smith This very popular beginning level quilt-making class is for those just learning to quilt or refreshing their skills. We will explore color, fabric selection, rotary cutting, machine piecing, binding, quilt care and more. During this six week course you will make a nine-block sampler lap quilt; however, instructions are provided for those who wish to enlarge their quilt. BLOOMING 9-PATCH QUILT Instructor: Liza Harrison Although this quilt design looks very complicated, it is actually very simple to make. It is constructed of alternating 9-patches and plain squares. The design starts in the center of the quilt, then the blocks are joined on point to create a unique and beautiful illusion of the fabrics “blooming” out to the edge. It finishes to 72” x 82”. Some pre-cutting is required prior to the first class, so be sure to get a supply list when you sign up for the class. Three 5-hour classes. $65 Thursdays, Jan 9, Feb 6, Mar 6 10am – 3pm
LOLLYPOP TREES QUILT Instructor: Liza Harrison If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to machine applique, this is the perfect quilt! It’s bright and fun and very scrappy. You can use lots of those multi-colored Kaffe Fassett fabrics, or it’s a great way to use up tons of scraps from your own stash! Three classes. $65. FRENCH BRAID QUILT Instructor: Tonda Helm Have you loved the look of the French Braid quilts that have been surfacing over the last few years? Have you thought you could never do it because it looks too hard? It’s easier than it looks and is really just a two-sided log cabin. EASY DRESDEN PLATE Instructor: Tonda Helm Learn just how easy it is to make your very own Dresden Plate. In this class, you will learn how to use the Dresden template to cut your pieces, sew each “wedge” to get that wonderful point, and then how to sew them together to get your “plate”. Different techniques to attach your “plate” to the background as well as making and attaching the center circle will be discussed. One 4-hour class. $45. Saturday, Mar 1 1-5pm

This beginning needle-turn hand applique class will help you get over your fears. TSHIRT/MEMORY QUILT TECHNIQUES Instructor: Sharon Smith Are you wanting to know what to do with all those special T-shirts that you have been saving? ALL SEASONS PLACEMATS Instructor: Ruth Droll Appliqué by embroidery machine is a fun technique that makes stitching designs not only easy, but very quick! This lesson will show two different ways to stitch appliqué designs on the embroidery machine while stitching up some adorable placemats for the seasons of the year. INDIGO BLOSSOMS TABLE RUNNER Instructor: Ruth Droll Machine embroider this lovely Table Runner while learning design placement and quilting techniques. The design is from BERNINA Embroidery Collection Indigo Blossoms #21006. Use the suggested collection color scheme or change it to gray scale. This requires an embroidery machine that has a 5”x7” hoop or larger. Pre-requisite: Machine guide class. Must know how to work your embroidery machine and transfer designs to your machine. BEGINNING COMPUTER Instructor: Penny Muncaster-Jewell This class focuses on how to use your computer. If you have computer embroidery software (such as Artista, PE-Design, BES, or Viking software) this is the class for you. Please take this before attending the other embroidery software class. You will learn how to find designs, load them onto your computer and write them to a USB stick to take designs to your machines or how to write design to the reader/writer box. You will also learn how to organize your designs and pictures using the Windows Explorer; create folders, and dragging and dropping files; how to create shortcuts for your favorite software; and how to scan images and save them for use with your embroidery software. SEW CONTEMPO CLASS SCHEDULE JAN-APR 2014 SPLITTING AND ALIGNMENT Instructor: Penny Muncaster-Jewell In this class Penny shows how to create embroidery designs that are too big for your hoop, so that they sew out perfectly! First you will see how the stitch out goes - that’s when you really get it! Next Penny shows how to create the whole thing, and then how to split it and add in the alignment lines to help it go back together. Penny uses PE-Design to show this, but this technique can be used in most embroidery/digitizing software. This is not a hands-on class but samples will be provided for you to try this at home. CREATE YOUR OWN CUTWORK DESIGNS Instructor: Penny Muncaster-Jewell This is a hands-on software class, showing you how to create cutwork designs in PE-Design software. Many great ideas for doing other digitized designs. Learn how to create a plan and then follow it. Learn how to add Richlieu bars and other accents such as wing needle work and manual punch outlines to make your cutwork spectacular. You will also get a free cutwork design in this class. Also, how to use the new cutwork blades now available for many sewing machines. One 4-hour class. $40. Friday, Feb 21 10am-2pm
APPLIQUÉ THE PENNY WAY! Instructor Penny Muncaster-Jewell This is a hands-on software class, showing you how to create appliqué designs in PE-Design software. Several different approaches will be shown as well as how to convert an existing design to incorporate appliqué. CLASS/EVENT POLICIES RESERVATIONS You must pre-register for all classes. Classes are reserved on a first-come basis. Only payment in full of a class will reserve a spot in the class for you. You may call the store and register for classes over the phone with a credit card or come into the store to register in person. It helps the classes make if you sign up as early as possible. MAGIC NUMBERS We will cancel a class if less than the minimum number of students required is not met five (5) days prior to the beginning of class. If we must cancel, you can choose to either: (a) receive a refund of your class fee, (b) apply the amount towards another class, or (c) receive a store credit. REFUNDS Your class fee is refundable or transferable up to seven (7) days prior to the first time the class meets. No refunds on special events unless we are able to fill your spot prior to day of event. SUPPLIES We would appreciate it if you purchase your class supplies from Sew Contempo. To encourage this, we offer a 15% discount on class supplies. This discount remains valid as long as the class is meeting. Please ask for your class supply list when registering for classes. VISITORS/CHILDREN/CELL PHONES Please do not bring visitors or children (under 18) to class. As a courtesy to the teacher and the other students in class, please keep your cell phone off or put it on vibrate. You may always give the store number to anyone needing to reach you in case of emergency. MARK YOUR CALENDARS Make note on your calendars of all classes you signed up for. It is at the teacher’s discretion whether they make a reminder call prior to class. If there is a change or the class is cancelled, we will make every attempt to contact you. EQUIPMENT Most sewing/quilting classes require a sewing machine. Please make sure your machine is in good working order and you are familiar with the machine prior to class. Remember to bring your power cord, foot control, accessories, and owner’s manual. We do offer machine rentals if you can’t bring a machine to class. Please inquire when registering for class. For software/guide classes requiring a laptop, please be familiar with your laptop and have the required class software loaded and functioning prior to classes. Remember your power cord and security device (dongle) if needed to run the software. INTERMEDIATE SEWING – PAJAMA PANTS & PILLOWCASE Instructor: Ruth Droll Learn basic sewing techniques while constructing a pair of Pajama pants with an elastic waistband. You will learn how to take body measurements, choose your correct pattern size, read a pattern, choose fabric, lay out the pattern and assemble a simple garment. BEGINNING SMOCKING Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Learn the basic smocking stitches on a pleated sample and apply what you learn to a cute little sundress. We will cover how to read smocking plates and designs and apply the information to this first project. You will receive a pleated sample, practice floss, and your dress will be pleated for free. PICTURE SMOCKING Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Learn to smock those cute little pictures that the boys and girls like so much. ADDING SMOCKING TO ANY PATTERN Instructor: Cathy Tiemann Well…almost anything! We will first cover how to add a few pleats to many commercial patterns. Secondly, a little smocked box added to a t-shirt or other garment will be demonstrated. Lastly, you will make a little smocked pocket. BERNINA FOOT CLASS – Applique Techniques Instructor: Ruth Droll This workbook class is designed to help familiarize you with some of the many BERNINA presser feet. BLOOMING 9-PATCH QUILT Instructor: Liza Harrison Although this quilt design looks very complicated, it is actually very simple to make. It is constructed of alternating 9-patches and plain squares. The design starts in the center of the quilt, then the blocks are joined on point to create a unique and beautiful illusion of the fabrics “blooming” out to the edge. It finishes to 72” x 82”. Some pre-cutting is required prior to the first class, so be sure to get a supply list when you sign up for the class. Three 5-hour classes. $65 Thursdays, Jan 9, Feb 6, Mar 6 10am – 3pm
LOLLYPOP TREES QUILT Instructor: Liza Harrison If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to machine applique, this is the perfect quilt! It’s bright and fun and very scrappy. EASY DRESDEN PLATE Instructor: Tonda Helm Learn just how easy it is to make your very own Dresden Plate. BEGINNING COMPUTER Instructor: Penny Muncaster-Jewell This class focuses on how to use your computer. If you have computer embroidery software (such as Artista, PE-Design, BES, or Viking software) this is the class for you. Please take this before attending the other embroidery software class. You will learn how to find designs, load them onto your computer and write them to a USB stick to take designs to your machines or how to write design to the reader/writer box. You will also learn how to organize your designs and pictures using the Windows Explorer; create folders, and dragging and dropping files; how to create shortcuts for your favorite software; and how to scan images and save them for use with your embroidery software. SEW CONTEMPO CLASS SCHEDULE JAN-APR 2014 SPLITTING AND ALIGNMENT Instructor: Penny Muncaster-Jewell In this class Penny shows how to create embroidery designs that are too big for your hoop, so that they sew out perfectly! First you will see how the stitch out goes - that’s when you really get it! Next Penny shows how to create the whole thing, and then how to split it and add in the alignment lines to help it go back together. Penny uses PE-Design to show this, but this technique can be used in most embroidery/digitizing software. This is not a hands-on class but samples will be provided for you to try this at home. CREATE YOUR OWN CUTWORK DESIGNS Instructor: Penny Muncaster-Jewell This is a hands-on software class, showing you how to create cutwork designs in PE-Design software. Many great ideas for doing other digitized designs. Learn how to create a plan and then follow it. Learn how to add Richlieu bars and other accents such as wing needle work and manual punch outlines to make your cutwork spectacular. You will also get a free cutwork design in this class. CLASS/EVENT POLICIES RESERVATIONS You must pre-register for all classes. Classes are reserved on a first-come basis. Only payment in full of a class will reserve a spot in the class for you. You may call the store and register for classes over the phone with a credit card or come into the store to register in person. It helps the classes make if you sign up as early as possible. MAGIC NUMBERS We will cancel a class if less than the minimum number of students required is not met five (5) days prior to the beginning of class. If we must cancel, you can choose to either: (a) receive a refund of your class fee, (b) apply the amount towards another class, or (c) receive a store credit. REFUNDS Your class fee is refundable or transferable up to seven (7) days prior to the first time the class meets. No refunds on special events unless we are able to fill your spot prior to day of event. SUPPLIES We would appreciate it if you purchase your class supplies from Sew Contempo. For software/guide classes requiring a laptop, please be familiar with your laptop and have the required class software loaded and functioning prior to classes.
