Solo U nsupported Continental Crossing. It was reported that Borge O usland departed A ntarctica’s B erkner Island in the W eddell Sea on N ovem ber 15 and arrived at Ross Island’s New Zealand Scott Base in M cM urdo Sound at 23:45 GMT, January 17, 1997, having trekked 1,764 m iles in 64 days. During his crossing he pulled a 408-pound sled. Three other men also
started the crossing on N ovem ber 15. Sir Randolph Tw istleton-W ykem an-Fiennes dropped out in m id-D ecem ber with kidney stones; M arek Kaminski o f Poland reached the South Pole on January 14, but decided to discontinue his solo trans-A ntarctic expedition three days later for undisclosed reasons.
