The 2012 expansion of Edmonton International Airport (EIA) was born from the need to accommodate a growing market of US travelers as well as providing additional services and amenities for all passengers. The airport anticipates 10 million passengers traveling through the new terminal by 2020. In addition to a new Domestic-International Passenger Lounge and control tower, this LEED registered project also brought 34 more shops, services and restaurants into the airport. The overall design concept for the expansion utilized elements of nature, and the color palette was highlighted by natural light streaming in from large windows surrounding the space. Finishings were chosen in toned-down, cool beige colors. Wayfinding markers used deep colors - blues and greens - to represent summer and winter and to show passengers that they were entering a different area. In keeping with the natural aesthetic, a 1,420 square foot Living Wall comprised of approximately 8,000 individual plants functions as art and a means to absorb toxic indoor air pollutants.
Why Powerbond ®?
Tandus Flooring’s Powerbond, a hybrid resilient sheet flooring, provides the ideal solution for a high traffic airport facility. Its welded seams create a moisture impermeable barrier making the floorcovering durable and easy to maintain. Powerbond’s heterogeneous construction of nylon and closed cell cushion serves as a medium for visual innovation, which is evident in the EIA installation. In areas where passenger traffic flow should keep moving, the flooring patterns are more linear and allow passengers to follow a subtle straight line. In contrast, flooring patterns in gathering and meeting areas are more complex to invite passengers to slow down a bit and wander the area.
Powerbond, a hybrid resilient sheet flooring, provides the ideal solution for a high traffic airport facility. EIA chose finishings that were both financially and socially responsible to minimize their carbon footprint and replacement timelines. Life-cycle cost analysis, an assessment of total ownership costs, indicates that Powerbond is a fiscally responsible flooring selection. The resilient closed cell cushion supports a healthier indoor environment by absorbing impact, improving thermal insulation and acoustical performance and providing comfort underfoot. Powerbond is also 100% recyclable and available with recycled content, making it an environmentally responsible choice for EIA.
