The creative brief The Fringe began when eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the newly formed Edinburgh International Festival. Not being asked to take part didn’t stop these artists and they went ahead and staged their shows on the fringe of the Festival anyway. This is where our name comes from, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. More than 70 years later, the Fringe still defies the norm and thousands of performers and audience members travel from around the world to the cobbled streets of Edinburgh to showcase their talent and share their skills in a supportive environment. Last year we asked Scotland’s schoolchildren to design the front cover of the Fringe Programme, and we were excited to receive over 5,000 entries from 187 schools across the country. 168 posters were exhibited at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh during the Fringe, including 14 regional winners. This year, we would like children and young people to design a poster for the Fringe. Once again, we will be awarding three winners from three age categories. Other than age, all posters are judged blind, and we are looking for the most creative design that captures the spirit of the Fringe.
The poster design guidelines ★★ Use any media or materials to create your design. ★★ Final entries must be submitted in the following format: 2D

★★ Entries must be the pupils’ original artwork. ★★ Collaborative entries can be submitted under a group name as long as the collaboration is between pupils within the same age category. ★★ Do not include the words ‘Edinburgh Festival Fringe’, ‘Fringe’, ‘edfringe’ or the dates of the festival. Use the whole A3 space for your design.
Examples of accepted digital entries: ★★ Drama class – pupils may have devised a new piece of theatre. Take a photograph of your favourite section and submit this in a printed, portrait, A3 format. ★★ Literacy lesson – pupils may have been penning poems in the classroom using the Fringe as a theme. The final poems can be handwritten, typed or doodled onto A3, portrait format. ★★ The same principles apply for photography, animation, textiles and sculpture art. While you can use a variety of media to create your design, all entries MUST be captured in A3 portrait finish for final submission. If you have any questions regarding what constitutes an accepted entry, please contact the poster team.
