Sports report : Week ending Saturday 7th May 2011 Cricket The 1st XI set off for their first match of the season in the Liverpool College round of the regional 20/20 competition. In their first match BGSB played very well to restrict Liverpool to 104 runs off 20 overs, with good bowling performances from Alex Breckin and Tom Parton. BGSB then replied scoring 107 off only 12 overs to win the match. The pick of the batsmen were Tom Parton with 41 not out and Danny Lomax with 25. In the second fixture BGSB were overwhelmed by a very strong King’s Chester team who scored 246 from their 20 overs. Despite some stubborn resistance from Neville Mamoowala (30 runs) BGSB were then bowled out for 86 to seal a comfortable victory for King’s Chester. A respectful display by the U15s was not enough to beat a very good Manchester Grammar School side. MGS’s Maxwell scored 58 before eventually being bowled out by BGSB captain Matthew Bowen. Setting BGSB a total of 146 from their 20 overs, MGS started well, removing BGSB’s opening pair for only 9 runs. The MGS bowlers worked through the BGSB middle order with only Matthew Buckley providing a glimmer of hope. After 20 overs BGSB only managed 93 runs. This was a respectful score against a well practised MGS side. The U14s won the toss and opted to bat first, hoping to set a good score in which they could defend against a strong MGS side. After the first 5 overs BGSB found themselves struggling, only scoring 15 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Then entered Kieran Rajasansir who went on to score an unbeaten 62 in 88 balls, his personal best, which helped take the team to a final score of 89. A strong batting line-up saw the opponents race to 62 in 5 overs without loss until Shahid Ghani took a difficult catch at mid on. After that the opponents found it difficult to score because of some excellent fielding which limited them to singles. However the explosive start proved to be pivotal and MGS reached their desired total of 90 for 1 in the 13th over. In the U13 match the Manchester Grammar School’s opening batsmen put on a good partnership and it wasn’t until the 13th over that quick fielding from Lawrence Adlum led to MGS’s opening batsman being run out. MGS went on to score 163 for 1. An excellent display of both pace and spin bowling made short work of the BGSB batting order with BGSB making only 61 runs. Manchester Grammar School looked shaky at the beginning and the U12s had taken two wickets in the first 3 overs for only 10 runs. MGS then had a good partnership, putting on a total of 72 runs. Outstanding bowling came from Richard Catterall (4 overs, 10 runs and 2 wickets) and Jonathan Howard (4 overs for only 8 runs). Daniel James contributed well by taking 3 wickets for only 13 runs off 2 overs. BGSB fielded well and had MGS at 139 off 20 overs at the end of the first innings. In the second innings BGSB were 1 for 2 wickets after only 3 overs. Richard Catterall had an outstanding innings, scoring 42 not out, but BGSB could only manage 91 runs within the 20 overs and MGS won by 48 runs.
