Piedmont, a youth Baseball and Softball League in Hockessin has a Buddy Ball Program to enable boys and girls with physical and/or intellectual challenges, ages 5-19, to enjoy the game of baseball. This program is affiliated with the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Baseball and Softball League. As the name implies this program makes allowance for a “buddy” to help the player experience the thrill of playing baseball by assisting them to swing a bat, round the bases, catch a ball, but whenever possible, encourages the players to bat and make plays themselves. The Buddy Ball program allows the players to be part of an organized sport, to make new friendships and to develop confidence and a positive self-esteem. The Players express such delight when they put on their baseball uniforms! The Buddy Ball program is an emotionally rewarding experience for everyone as it also allows the buddies to gain valuable lessons of diversity, awareness and acceptance. Parents and teenagers are encouraged to become involved in this uniquely rewarding program of Piedmont. Teenagers may become buddies, while parents may become involved in practices, coaching and other volunteer positions. But most important, we are looking for players to join our new league!
