THE CHALLENGE: Find a reliable and robust VMware backup solution that improves disaster recovery processes.
Lukasz Komorowski, System Administrator at GLS, was responsible for finding a reliable and robust VMware backup solution. “Our goal was to find a product that offered proven stability and great functionality,” he explained. “What I didn’t realize was that I would find a product that also provided incredible backup and file-level recovery speed, resulting in improved data security and usability.”
The Veeam Solution The IT team at GLS Poland implemented Veeam Backup & Replication and experienced instant success. “Our previous backup process included tape archive commands and an NFS share because most of our servers are Linux boxes,” Lukasz explained. “This backup process took six hours, plus another two hours to copy all the tape archive files to tape. With these time constraints, we were only able to copy the most important files from servers.” Veeam Backup & Replication reduced that eight-hour process to two hours and 30 minutes. “This difference in speed is very important to us, but there is something much more important—Veeam gives us full confidence in matters of data security and usability.” File-level recovery speed has improved with Veeam Backup & Replication as well. “Before Veeam, we used a tar command to manually search for files in big tar archives, and that took up to 90 minutes,” Lukasz continued. “With Veeam, we simply use the file-level restore wizard, and after a few clicks, we can retrieve any file from any virtual machine, in just a few minutes. Full virtual machine restores are a lot quicker with Veeam too. With the previous process, only two of our seven-person IT team was able to do a full restore, and it took hours. With Veeam, anyone on the IT team can restore a whole server, and it takes minutes, not hours. This is incredible functionality.”
