The Information Management & Technology Business Unit for the Gosford City Council supports every aspect of city government, as well as 1,000 users. Nearly 85 percent of the city’s main data center is virtualized with nine VMware hosts and 130 virtual machines (VMs), which provide crucial IT services that support programs and services for more than 160,000 residents. While VM backup and replication is fast and easy now, that wasn’t always the case. Byron Twilley, Systems Administrator for Gosford City Council, said there was a time when backups ran past the allotted timeframe (9 p.m. to 7 a.m.), which affected the production environment and users the next morning. “We were using a native backup solution at the time, but it behaved more like a beta version than an actual release,” he explained. “Then we tested backing up our VMs with the same tool we use to back up the physical servers, but it behaved poorly and was unreliable. Plus, both products were difficult to set up and consumed more storage space than necessary.” Byron and his colleagues set out to find a cost-effective, reliable and easy-to-use VM backup solution.
