Groupe ADEO Services started their datacenter virtualization project in 2005 with the deployment of two VMware ESX servers. The new environment consisted of about 1,000 virtual machines (VMs) dedicated to either a line of work or infrastructure production, and they represented a 65% share which switched to virtualization. Management of the datacenters’ infrastructure and ensuring data protection and recovery were central to the daily preoccupations of ADEO Services. Initially, ADEO Services used a conventional backup solution with agents for all of its VMs. Subsequently, a new tool for performing backups directly to tape derived from an “in-house” script soon took over, but quickly showed performance limitations. VMware’s VCB solution was then adopted for one year. However, with a constantly growing virtualized environment the operations team decided to investigate an even more powerful disk backup solution for faster recovery, accompanied by the publication of detailed reports for constant supervision.

After a series of tests to measure the speed of backups and especially recovery, Veeam Backup & Replication™ clearly outweighed the competition. Automation, ease of implementation and usability of the tool complemented the alreadyrecorded performances. An additional selective asset was the centralized administration console that, with its very streamlined and intuitive administration interface, gave administrators the advantage of being operational without needing any specific or expensive training. Today, thanks to almost 150 installed licenses of Veeam Backup & Replication, ADEO Services are able to cover a wide scope of development environments and their live production datacenter to ensure they fully absorb the regular scalability requirements and business demands. “In the event of a disk array crash, which represents several terabytes of data, we wanted to be able to restore power as quickly as possible in all the VMs without using disk mirroring systems. The Enterprise Edition of Veeam Backup & Replication was selected by ADEO Services because they wanted to take advantage of all the unique features Veeam Backup & Replication had to offer. “The automatic and permanent verification of each backup of every virtual machine was an important selection criterion for us. The functionality of Veeam’s SureBackup™ now assures us near-absolute availability,” continued B. Maillet. Veeam Backup & Replication creates a test environment on request without the need for additional space or dedicated resources. “Being able to clone a production environment on a development environment allows us to solve specific problems or to test patches or application code without impacting user activity,” explained B. Mailliet. Within the ADEO Services datacenter, 700 VMs in the Linux environment now benefit from the fully integrated “virtual machine instant recovery” feature of Veeam Backup & Replication. Previously in the Linux environment, this task initially required starting a VM to load the file system. The Veeam Enterprise Managers centralized administration console is another major advantage of Veeam Backup & Replication. It provides a centralized view of the process and the backup configurations, which was lacking in previous solutions. It generates alerts and provides information from which daily reports on the backup status are generated. Previously, backups on tapes were made only after backing up all VMs on disks, or after 24 hours. Veeam Backup & Replication allows sequencing this task through a job-backup scheduling feature, thereby facilitating the export of backups stored on disks to tapes. “The automated process proposed by Veeam Backup greatly reduces the time our teams spend on supervision. The tool is very easy to use. All the administrators rapidly understood the file recovery operations. The addition or deletion of VMs does not require resetting Veeam Backup,” emphasized B. Mailliet. Thanks to deduplication and compression of the source data, ADEO Services believes it has halved its disk space consumption. “We believe that the initial volume of 5 TB of data takes up 1 TB of disk space. With our bandwidth requirements reduced, we can backup our VMs daily on a site several miles away, which we could not have been done without Veeam,” confided B. Mailliet.
