Summer Reading List Students Entering 4th Grade Grade 4

June-August 2017

Required Reading List Harriet the Spy By Louise Fitzhugh

Dear Upcoming 4th Grade Student, Summer vacation is almost here! We hope that you make it a time to REST, RELAX, READ, but above all ENJOY! Reading, like a sport, involves practice and skill. Real skill building occurs when you read for pleasure, when you read “just right” books, that is, books that are not too hard and not too easy, and when you explore books about topics that interest you. The more you practice, the better and more confident reader you will become.

Required Summer Reading Assignment: Choose two of the books from this list and complete one of the following projects FOR EACH. 1. Using a shoebox, create a Diorama for your book.

The Witches By: Roald Dahl

Step 1: Get a shoe box that is approximately 12x6x4 (does not have to be exact size) Step 2: Line the inside of your box with construction paper, decorative paper, or paint Step 3: Add details to the walls of the box using paper, paint, or anything creative Step 4: Create your favorite scene from the book by using any type of materials: paper, clay, play-doh, foil, twigs, pebbles, Legos, dolls, and other objects Step 5: Put the title and the author where it is visible on the top of the box The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane By: Kate DiCamillo

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson By: Bette Lord

2. Turn your novel in to a comic strip. Step 1: After reading your novel, choose an important or exciting part of the book that you would like to retell in your comic strip. Find a part that will allow you to include action and dialogue. Write a two-paragraph summary of this part of your book. Step 2: Refer to your summary as you sketch your comic strip. Decide what you will include in each panel. Your comic strip should include eight panels in all. If you have difficulty drawing the characters, you may draw stick figures. Make sure to give them some identifiable characteristics so that the reader can tell them apart. Also make sure that the sequence of events is clear and easy to follow. This draft will be turned in with your final project. Step 3: After you have finished your draft, position a sheet of white construction paper horizontally and draw eight boxes of equal size. (You might need to make some larger and some smaller, depending on what you will include in each.) Draw and write in pencil first, then trace over with pen or thin marker. Keep the illustrations and text as neat as possible. Then, color your comic strip. Step 4: Give your comic strip a title. Write your name, the book, and the author’s name on your project.
