There was a boy who loved a girl...and he brought light into her life.

VISION What I find engaging in this story, is the idea of finding beauty in a place that is considered by high society as repulsive- or even insignificant- “the slums”. At times during their youth flashbacks, I will carefully compose scenes to feel like they are the only two people in the world, even amongst a sea of people. A heavy focus will be on lighting- when one of them is in light, the other is in shadow, except at key moments in their relationship where the audience truly feels they are united. Using this same theme for camera and blocking, we can create their love story. We will use intimate, tighter shots when they are closer in their relationship and wider, more despondent when they are farther away, or away from each other. Always having some motion, even slightly, will help convey their adventure and journey.

The Storytellers new voices of the twilight

saga

(*this photo is not Egyptian)

One of the things I love about this script is that it is a new kind of love story for the Twilight universe. It starts as a friendship, that blossoms from a single act of kindness, I want “Sunrise” to exude the magic of Ancient Egypt into the love that we see develop later. while feeling like a relatable and modern story fans can fall in love with. I plan on marrying the slum environments with the rich, jewel-toned colors and textures, many textiles, and Overall look and feel dramatic lighting (highlights of day and night) as represented in this photo.

When I contacted the writer, Alanna, she shared her thoughts about themes and why she used certain elements. I think it’s important to collaborate from the start. And as a result, I decided to expand on her use of certain elements with my vision for the film.

I want to evoke differences in mood and lighting between the night and day scenes. I always saw this as a way to represent what was happening between Tia and Benjamin “I was largely inspired by the way Stephenie Meyer uses sun/moon imagery in her books to echo relationships. The time of day is meant to reflect key points in the Benjamin and Tia relationship.” ~Alanna

The writer focused on hands as a means of expressing Tia and Benjamin’s relationship, which I found to be a beautiful way to show the evolution of their love and the depth that it has.

“I definitely see hands as the way Benjamin and Tia show affection. There’s a lot of hand-holding, reaching out, small touches and so on. I wanted their relationship to have that kind of childlike sweetness where they don’t even have to kiss for you to see how much they matter to each other.” ~Alanna

CASTING Every effort will be made to cast as closely to Egyptian look and features as possible. It is important to both the writer and I that we maintain that authenticity of the characters. In turn, this will help bring more opportunity for “minority” actors. My proximity to New York, gives me a wealth of resources for casting. For scenes that require mnay people(like the marketplace), we can utilize VFX, wardrobe and other elements to help fill the scene with additional actors.

BENJAMIN

*7 *6

Benjamin is a wonderful character in the Twilight world as he holds some of the most powerful abilities while being able to maintain a gentleness about him that stems from his love for others and sense of curiosity and adventure. His kindness and love presented in this script make him a very likeable person - but not one without struggle. He has lived a hard life as a street performer and slave to his uncle, having to let go of his one true love, though he never gave up the love he had for Tia. I would love to explore this character in depth while making this film.

TIA

What engages me about Tia is her strength, even from a young age. She is a strong female character that can act and think for herself - as evidenced in her plans for them. She may have been consoled by Benjamin in the beginning when brought to live with them, but she quickly developed on her own. The complexities of loyalty to her family and her love for Benjamin make me want to explore more about her and bring this character to life. I also am interested in conveying how they have both “aged” on an emotional level but still maintain the youthfulness of their love

CAVE

The cave scene will be shot using a combination of 2nd unit filming and greenscreen. Carson National Forest Santa Fe, NM "In fall 2011, my partner Kevin was working on a film called Blaze You Out. One of the scenes took place in a carved sandstone cave located near Espanola, New Mexico, that is known as The Tree Cave. “Ra” Paulette, is the artist who’d singlehandedly sculpted the cave out of soft, naturally occurring sandstone." Embudo, New Mexico, a region bordering the Rio Grande River and the Carson National ForestRa Paulette has spent the last 25 years using a pickaxe to hack a labyrinth of 14 caves into sandstone cliffs just an hour’s drive from Santa Fe.

NM is a place where we could shoot our slum/marketplace exteriors in combination with some greenscreen work and set extensions. Acoma Sky City, NM

With matte painting/CG work by a VFX artist, we can transform this location into Cairo in 1810 - by adding architectural elements and landscape changes. This area has no running water or electricity- leaving more modern elements free from heavy post production work. *12 Cairo 1800

There are deserts in Maine, RI and New Mexico where we can accomplish some of the shots in combination with filming in an indoor horse arena for action (sand). With matte painting and VFX, we can transform these locations into what is needed.

The MARKETPLACE *23

*26

We will plan on building a set piece for the fountain in the marketplace, and adding elements of roped awnings, etc But again, a little VFX will help convey the right scenery - keeping it minimal as far as scope, but still rich and textural is the goal to help stay within budget
