SVP Seattle 2016 Brainerd Fellowship Announcement

Who Is Social Venture Partners? Social Venture Partners (SVP) builds powerful relationships among people and organizations that are out to make our world a better place. With a network of more than 3,200 engaged individuals in 39 cities we cultivate effective philanthropists, fund and strengthen nonprofits, and invest in collaborative solutions to address critical social challenges. The SVP model is built around:   

Engaged Philanthropy – SVP connects and engages SVP Partners in shared learning, collective grantmaking, and hands on volunteering with investee organizations. Capacity Building – SVP investees receive multi-year, general operating support and pro bono consulting from SVP Partners to strengthen their organizational capacity. Facilitating Collective Action – SVP invests in collaborative solutions, acting as a convener and connector so organizations with a common cause can align their efforts to influence systemic change.

SVP Partners make an annual contribution of $6,000 ($2,500 for under 35 years). Their donations are pooled to fund King County nonprofits that improve the lives of kids and protect our environment and to provide educational opportunities for Partners to develop into effective philanthropists and community leaders. We help individuals give more, give more strategically, and engage effectively in their communities. For more information, visit www.svpseattle.org. What Is the Brainerd Fellowship? To ensure a strong, healthy Partnership, SVP continually strives to increase the diversity of socio-economic classes, cultural backgrounds, and professional and life experiences, and ensure a rich and varied network of perspectives. In this spirit, SVP invites interested individuals in King County to apply for a fellowship, named in honor of SVP’s cofounder, Paul Brainerd, and reflects his spirit and ethos. The participation and infusion of diverse voices, perspectives, and experiences into decision-making processes ensure a sense of cultural competency and effectiveness that will help widen and strengthen the SVP Network and will help to achieve our community wide goals. The fellowships are funded by current Partners and cover the annual Partner contribution. Why Would You Want to Be a Fellow? We wish to attract individuals who will find personal and/or professional reward from, and add value to, engaging in SVP’s work. Brainerd Fellows bring perspectives and insights that would otherwise have been lacking, thereby enriching the experience for all Partners and the outcomes we achieve. Fellows learn about capacity building, the non-profit landscape, collective action, and systems change, while building a network of colleagues and friends. Fellows participate in as many SVP activities as they wish, and activities primarily occur in and around the Seattle area during the workday and evenings. We estimate the time commitment to be 4 to 8 hours/month, depending on interests. Opportunities include:

 Serving on a grant committee This is a six-month process with a group of 12-14 Partners. Committee members learn about our issue areas, the nonprofit landscape, how to evaluate grant proposals and nonprofits, and how to make group funding decisions.

 Volunteer Consulting SVP annually provides over 2,500 hours of volunteer consulting to our investees in the following areas: • Strategy and planning • Legal counsel • Management consulting • Marketing, PR, communications • Human resources • Leadership development • Information technology • Mentoring and tutoring • Financial management

 Educational Workshops and Engagements Fellows are welcome to attend any of the workshops, seminars, and networking events SVP offers, addressing topics such as: • Community issues • Diversity and Cultural Competency • Grantmaking • Nonprofit sector • Volunteering Criteria for Consideration: We encourage people of all backgrounds to apply. We will consider the following specific criteria in our selection:    

You are someone who will bring racial diversity to the SVP Partnership. You have a historical or emerging desire to make a significant contribution to our community. You see yourself continuing to grow that commitment in the years ahead. You consider yourself to be a social systems change leader. You would not otherwise have the financial means to make the annual contribution to participate in SVP.
