» The Owls control their fate with regards to earning a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament which Temple will host Nov. 4-6. They will earn a berth with a win at Liberty on Friday, but they can also get in with a loss as long as Old Dominion does not beat Providence at home that same afternoon. » Temple is coming off a much-needed, 3-2 win against Quinnipiac on Oct. 21. Freshman Maddie Merton scored twice and assisted on the third goal, while redshirt junior Sarah Keer scored a goal and had an assist. Merton was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts. » The Owls recently won four straight before having that streak snapped with a loss at Penn on Oct. 9. Temple lost again in its next game, getting edged 3-2 at BIG EAST foe Villanova on Oct. 15. » On Friday, Oct. 7, Temple upset No. 13 Old Dominion by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Howarth Field. Freshman Maddie Lilliock made nine saves, and junior Rachael Mueller scored the OT game-winner. Both players were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their efforts. » Mueller is the Owls’ leading scorer with nine goals this season, and three of those have been game-winning goals including two in overtime (at Sacred Heart, vs. No. 13 ODU). » The Owls’ first two wins in the streak included their their first shutout, a 2-0 victory against Holy Cross on Oct. 2. It was also the first career shutout for Lilliock, who currently ranks 10th in NCAA Division I with 7.06 saves per game. » Temple field hockey recently raised $1,509 for the Go4TheGoal Foundation’s Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative, which strives to improve the lives of children battling cancer. » Lilliock was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Sept. 19 after strong performances vs. Providence and Monmouth. She tied her season high with 11 saves against the Friars, and added eight against the Hawks. » Temple field hockey celebrated the grand opening of Howarth Field on Sept. 2 when the Owls hosted No. 18 Penn State. The field is named in recognition of a $500,000 gift from field hockey alum Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth and her husband, Greg. » The Owls play 11 of their 18 regular-season games at Howarth Field in 2016. Sunday’s game is the last of those, and Temple will honor its four seniors for Senior Day against Lafayette. » Four of Temple’s losses have come to teams now ranked in the top 10 as of the Oct. 25 NFHCA Coaches Poll (No. 2 Syracuse, No. 3 UConn, No. 6 Penn State and No. 9 Delaware). » Fun fact: Lafayette assistant coach Sarah Dalrymple is a 2011 Temple graduate and was an NFHCA All-Region Second Team selection for Temple field hockey as a senior goalkeeper in 2010. » Freshman Becky Gerhart has notched seven defensive saves to tie for second among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros has three and is tied for 19th. The Owls’ 14 total defensive saves rank second in the nation.

SCOUTING LIBERTY Liberty has been a consistently strong program since starting a field hockey team in 2011 under coach Jodi Murphy, who remains the coach today. The Flames have struggled a little this season against a tough schedule, but have gone 6-8 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST to already secure a tournament berth. Liberty won 2-1 in overtime at No. 20 American on Oct. 6, and took down Providence 2-1 on the road last weekend. Earlier this year, the Flames took No. 2 Syracuse to overtime before losing 3-2. Most recently, Liberty fell 5-1 to No. 4 North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 23. UNC was the eighth ranked opponent Liberty had faced this season and fourth top-five team. Sisters Serena and Bethany Barr, both seniors, lead Liberty in total points with 17 each, scoring four goals in addition to tallying nine assists each. Freshman Agueda Moroni is the team leader in goals with nine after scoring three this past weekend to earn BIG EAST Offensive and Freshman of the Week honors. Freshman Allison Schaefer has played every minute in goal for the Flames with 93 saves to 36 goals allowed for a save percentage of .721. Temple and Liberty have met just twice before in program history. The Flames, then ranked No. 12, edged Temple in last year’s meeting by a score of 3-2 in double overtime. In 2011, the Owls won 3-0 at home. SCOUTING LAFAYETTE Lafayette is 7-9 overall but has lost six in a row heading into the weekend. The Leopards will face Lehigh at home on Friday before traveling to Temple on Sunday. Four of Lafayette’s losses have come to teams ranked in the Top 20, and the Leopards defeated No. 9 Boston University 2-1 on Sept. 23.
Senior Amanda Magadan leads Lafayette with seven goals and 16 total points, while freshman Lisa van der Geest and senior Ami Turner are tied for the team lead with four assists each. Senior Katelyn Arnold has been the Leopards’ only goalkeeper this season, boasting a save percentage of .650. Temple holds a 20-9-2 all-time lead in the series against Lafayette, and the Owls have won three straight including a 4-1 win last year and a 4-0 win the year before. TEMPLE TO HOST 2016 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT Temple’s first season on Howarth Field is coming with a big responsibility, as the Owls will serve as hosts for the 2016 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The semifinals are set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, with the championship game set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. All games will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) through FoxSportsGo.com and the FoxSportsGo app. The Owls last hosted a conference tournament in 2010 when they were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Temple has advanced to its conference tournament in each of the last 13 years including all three BIG EAST Tournaments since joining the league as an associate member in 2013. The Owls have earned a spot in the championship game two years in a row, falling to UConn in both. TOUGH LINEUP FOR TEMPLE IN 2016 As of the NFHCA Top 20 Coaches Poll for Oct. 25, four of Temple’s opponents were nationally ranked. The Owls have faced five opponents ranked at the time of the game, including four still in the Top 10- No. 2 Syracuse, No. 18 Penn State (now No. 6), No. 10 Delaware (now No. 9), and No. 3 UConn. Temple also beat then-No. 13 Old Dominion on Oct. 7. According to fieldhockeycorner.com, the Owls’ schedule is the eighth-toughest in Division I.
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVELY-MINDED With seven defensive saves so far in 2016, freshman Becky Gerhart is tied for second among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros is tied for 19th with three defensive saves. With 14 defensive saves as a team, the Owls rank second in the nation. Freshman Maddie Lilliock’s 7.06 saves per game rank 10th in the nation, and the Owls’ 8.00 saves per game rank eighth.

TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY WINS FOUR STRAIGHT After starting the season at 1-8 overall, the Owls bounced back to win four straight in a two-week span. An overtime win at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25 got the momentum going, and Temple followed that up with its first BIG EAST win on Sept. 30 by a score of 4-1 against Georgetown. Freshman Maddie Merton scored twice in that victory, while junior Rachael Mueller tapped in the game-winning second goal.

OWLS EDGE SACRED HEART IN OVERTIME With just under a minute remaining in the first overtime period, junior Rachael Mueller scored the game-winning goal for Temple in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25. It was the Owls’ second overtime contest in their last four games, but this time it ended in Temple’s favor thanks to Mueller, who scored two goals including the dagger when she spun around in the circle and found an opening to get the ball past Sacred Heart’s Emily Degennaro. “Obviously to snap a five-game losing streak feels really good,” said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. “We made things a little more difficult for ourselves than we needed to, but I was really happy to see how that final play developed. Rachael has been doing a really good job in practice, staying diligent and gaining confidence. We had a great passing combination leading into the final goal, and Rachael was able to execute on the reverse as the goalkeeper came out and challenged her.”
The victory marked the first for Temple against a ranked opponent so far this season. The Owls’ strength of schedule, ranked eighth in the nation, has seen them play four teams in the Top 10 already this year. “I think this win had a lot to do with our belief and our confidence,” said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. “We’ve had some tough, adverse situations early in the season and we’ve been saying ‘keep chipping away, keep chipping away.’ I’m really happy that we found the grit that we needed today to get the result that we knew we could get. We really put our belief into action against a really strong opponent in Old Dominion. I couldn’t be more proud of the team and how they were able to execute what we needed to do today.” TEMPLE PICKED FOURTH IN THE BIG EAST Temple field hockey was picked to finish fourth of eight teams in the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Three-time defending conference champion UConn was unanimously selected to defend its title.

Senior Katie Foran got things going for the Owls early in the second half with her first goal, and junior Rachael Mueller followed with a second to tie the game in the 49th minute. With just over eight minutes left, Foran scored the game-winner to complete the comeback and give the Owls the win. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock made 10 saves, while senior Ali Meszaros and freshman Becky Gerhart both tallied defensive saves. MUELLER SHINES IN CLUTCH TIME Junior Rachael Mueller leads Temple with nine goals so far in 2016, and has scored three of the Owls’ five game-winning goals (senior Katie Foran has the other two). All three of Mueller’s game-winners came in Temple’s recent streak of four wins in a row, with two of those goals coming in overtime. Mueller scored the OT game-winner in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25, and also scored the OT winner in a 2-1 upset of No. 13 Old Dominion on Oct. 7. INAUGURAL SEASON ON HOWARTH FIELD The 2016 season is the inaugural year for Temple field hockey’s new stadium. The Owls are playing for the first time on Howarth Field at the brand new Temple Sports Complex, and had a grand opening celebration at their home opener against Penn State on Friday, Sept. 2. The new complex also serves as the home for lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s track & field. The $22 million project, started in September 2015, features two playing fields. The space for field hockey and lacrosse, at the southern end of the property by 13th Street and Girard Avenue, is named Howarth Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa Howarth, ‘98, and her husband, Greg.
HEAD COACH MARYBETH FREEMAN SECOND YEAR • OLD DOMINION ‘03 CAREER RECORD 60-62 (SEVEN YEARS) Marybeth Freeman, a five-time NCAA Division I champion as a player and coach, was hired as the head field hockey coach of Temple University on March 10, 2015. In Freeman’s debut season, the Owls made a second consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Final before falling to two-time defending national champion and second-ranked UConn. The end of the season saw a five-game win streak for Temple prior to the conference championship game. The run showed what the Owls were capable of, starting with a 1-0 upset of #12 Old Dominion on Oct. 20. Freeman had four Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region selections, four All-BIG EAST selections and a Longstreth/NFHCA All-American in her first season at Temple. Off the field, Freeman’s Owls earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award in field hockey for a second year in a row, and 20 of her student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Freeman came to Temple after spending five seasons as the head field hockey coach for Columbia University, and was previously an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons, winning three national championships with the Terps.
