SCOUTING UCONN The Huskies, three-time defending BIG EAST champs, are ranked third in the nation and are undefeated at 7-0. UConn has defeated three teams ranked in the Top 20, including a dominating, 8-0 victory over #14 Virginia in its most recent contest on Sept. 18. UConn won back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2013 and 2014 before advancing to the NCAA Semifinals in 2015. Junior Charlotte Veitner, the Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year and a first team All-American last season, leads the Huskies with eight goals and six assists in 2016. UConn has a trio of other players who have scored five or more goals. Head coach Nancy Stevens is in her 27th season with UConn and her 38th overall, standing as the all-time wins leader in NCAA field hockey history (624-179-24). UConn leads Temple 9-2-1 in the all-time series, and has won the last eight straight meetings between the teams. INAUGURAL SEASON ON HOWARTH FIELD The 2016 season is the inaugural year for Temple field hockey’s new stadium. The Owls are playing for the first time on Howarth Field at the brand new Temple Sports Complex, and had a grand opening celebration at their home opener against Penn State on Friday, Sept. 2. The new complex just south of Temple’s Main Campus was completed in August, and also serves as the home for lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s track & field. The $22 million project, started in September 2015, features two playing fields. The space for field hockey and lacrosse, at the southern end of the property by 13th Street and Girard Avenue, is named Howarth Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa Howarth, ‘98, and her husband, Greg.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART The Pioneers are off to a tough start in 2016, still looking for their first win with an overall record of 0-8. Last weekend, Sacred Heart lost 5-2 at Brown and 3-0 vs. Dartmouth. The Pioneers went 2-14 last season but returned 18 letterwinners this year. They were picked to finish fourth of seven teams in the Preseason MAAC Coaches Poll. Hired just before the start of the 2016 season, head coach Sydney Van Der Merwe is in his first season at the helm of the program. Temple and Sacred Heart have met just once previously, with Temple winning 3-0 at home in 2013. OVERCOMING ADVERSITY The 2016 season has not gotten off to the kind of start Temple would have hoped for, but the Owls have experience in turning things around. Last year, an eight-game mid-season losing streak which included four ranked opponents and six one-goal decisions, gave way to an upset win at No. 12 Old Dominion on Oct. 20 that sparked Temple to five straight wins. The second-to-last of those (against Villanova) got the Owls into the BIG EAST Tournament, where they took down Villanova yet again for a spot in the championship game. TOUGH LINEUP FOR TEMPLE IN 2016 As of the NFHCA Preseason Top 20 Coaches Poll for Sept. 6, five of Temple’s opponents are nationally ranked. The Owls have already faced No. 2 Syracuse (now No. 1), No. 18 Penn State (now No. 5) and No. 10 Delaware. Still upcoming on the schedule are No. 3 UConn (Sept. 23) and No. 17 ODU (Oct. 7).
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY TEMPLE STORMS BACK IN FIRST VICTORY OF 2016 Trailing 2-0 at halftime against La Salle on Sept. 4, Temple’s backs were against the wall for its hopes of grabbing victory number one in the 2016 season. Senior Katie Foran got things going for the Owls early in the second half with her first goal, and junior Rachael Mueller followed with a second to tie the game in the 49th minute. With just over eight minutes left, Foran scored the game-winner to complete the comeback and give the Owls the win. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock made 10 saves, while senior Ali Meszaros and freshman Becky Gerhart both tallied defensive saves. DEFENSIVELY-MINDED With three defensive saves over eight games so far in 2016, freshman Becky Gerhart and senior Ali Meszaros are tied for sixth among all players in NCAA Division I. With seven defensive saves as a team, the Owls rank third in the nation. Freshman Maddie Lilliock’s 8.88 saves per game rank fifth in the nation, and the Owls’ 9.88 saves per game also rank fifth. OWLS LOSE OT HEARTBREAKER IN BIG EAST OPENER After an impressive late comeback for Temple against Providence on Sept. 16, the game ended in heartbreak for the Owls who lost 3-2 in overtime in their BIG EAST opener. Temple trailed by two with just over five minutes left in regulation before tying the game with back-to-back goals. With 5:07 remaining in regulation, junior Rachael Mueller scored on a rebounded shot and save to put Temple on the board. After a Providence timeout, freshman Maddie Merton wasted little time in scoring the game-tying goal, sending a perfect long ball in from the far right of the circle.
NEW FACILITY AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES AWAIT TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY IN 2016 When a team loses a large senior class and has an influx of newcomers, many refer to the following season as a “rebuilding year.” Second-year Temple field hockey head coach Marybeth Freeman sees the situation differently, and hopes her squad sees only the opportunities in front of them. “Now, more than ever, especially with the departure of 10 seniors, it is imperative that our team knows that everything right now is up for grabs,” said Freeman. “From the goalkeeping to the forward line, we need to work collaboratively as a team and understand that we are always going to put our best foot forward on the field.” Feeling empowered is the name of the game for Freeman and her staff as far as what they look to instill in their student-athletes. “Last year, there were spots that were a bit more concrete and filled readily,” noted Freeman. “Now there are vacated positions and it’s really a blank canvas. Those spots are up for anyone’s taking. I think that really empowers and inspires a lot of people on this team, and I think it’s going to make us even more competitive.” The 2016 Owls will also get inspiration from being the inaugural team to play on Howarth Field at the brand-new Temple Sports Complex. The $22 million project has been completed just in time for the fall, with the complex serving as the home of Temple’s field hockey, lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s track & field teams. The space for field hockey and lacrosse, at the southern end of the property by 13th Street and Girard Avenue, is named Howarth Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth, ‘98, and her husband, Greg. “We’re so fortunate to have Howarth Field,” said Freeman. “We’re extremely grateful to the Howarths and to all the alumni and parents that have made so many contributions, and to the administration that have supported us from the get-go on this whole project. For us to come out here and see this brand new Astroturf 12 and this whole new facility, and the locker room, it’s really special. It definitely empowers the women on the team, and hopefully also those that aspire to be on the team and those that played before us. We’re just so thankful for it.” Temple is led by four seniors this season in Katie Foran, Paige Gross, Ali Meszaros and Michelle Walsh. Foran, Gross and Meszaros have been named the 2016 team co-captains. While no current team members are decorated as far as conference honors and awards from past seasons, the senior group and other veterans have played integral roles in the successes of the last few years.
Five of the Owls’ 13 returning players started in at least half of the team’s games last season. Sarah Keer, returning for her fourth season as a redshirt junior, and junior Rachael Mueller, scored four goals apiece to tie for fourth on the team in 2015. Many other freshmen will be counted on to make an immediate impact, and the talent level is deep among the eight-member rookie class. The Owls will host a conference tournament for the first time in six years, as Temple hosted the Atlantic 10 Tournament back in 2010.
The contests against Penn State and La Salle will be the first two in a six-game homestand for Temple that also includes city rival Drexel (Sept. 11) and region rival Delaware (Sept. 9). The fifth game of that homestand sees the Owls starting BIG EAST play, hosting Providence on Friday, Sept. 16. The former six-team BIG EAST has now grown to eight in 2016, with the addition of Liberty and Quinnipiac. The new schools are the last two Temple will face in conference play. The Owls’ 2015 season turned around in a 1-0 defeat of #20 Old Dominion on the road, and Temple will face the Monarchs at home this season on Oct. 7. The BIG EAST Tournament is set for Friday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 6 at Temple and will feature the top four teams following the conclusion of the regular season. The tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 12. “In order for us to identify what we need to work on, I think it’s important that we play the best teams,” said Freeman. “In order for us to constantly push the envelope on how far we can go, we have to continually put ourselves in a position to be challenged. That’s the way we’re always going to work things, to help put us in the best situation at the end of the year and our BIG EAST Championships.”
HEAD COACH MARYBETH FREEMAN SECOND YEAR • OLD DOMINION ‘03 CAREER RECORD 55-59 (SEVEN YEARS) Marybeth Freeman, a five-time NCAA Division I champion as a player and coach, was hired as the head field hockey coach of Temple University on March 10, 2015. In Freeman’s debut season, the Owls made a second consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Final before falling to two-time defending national champion and second-ranked UConn. The end of the season saw a five-game win streak for Temple prior to the conference championship game. The run showed what the Owls were capable of, starting with a 1-0 upset of #12 Old Dominion on Oct. 20. Freeman had four Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region selections, four All-BIG EAST selections and a Longstreth/NFHCA All-American in her first season at Temple. Off the field, Freeman’s Owls earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award in field hockey for a second year in a row, and 20 of her student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Freeman came to Temple after spending five seasons as the head field hockey coach for Columbia University, and was previously an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons, winning three national championships with the Terps.
After leading Columbia to 12 wins in 2014, tying for the second-most in program history, Freeman was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year.
