HEADLINES
• Temple is looking to snap a three-game losing streak, with the most recent two of those losses coming by just a single goal (4-3 at #19 James Madison and 4-3 at American).
• Five of Temple's seven losses have come against teams ranked in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, and the Owls will face another three ranked teams in their next three games.
• Senior Alyssa Delp leads Temple with nine goals this season, and scored a penalty stroke goal in each of the Owls’ last two games. In Temple’s most recent win at Monmouth (Sept. 18), Delp recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Owls to a 4-2 win.
• Delp leads the team with nine goals, which also ranks in a tie for second among all players in the conference. Her goals per game average of 0.90 ranks 14th among all players in NCAA Division I.
• With 29 goals scored (2.90 goals per game), Temple ranks second only to #1 UConn among the teams
in the BIG EAST Conference. The Owls rank third in total penalty corners (73) but lead the BIG EAST in goals scored off corners with 11 (1.10 per game).
• Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell tied her career high with eight saves a recent loss to Northwestern, and has made 52 total saves for the season.
• The Owls achieved their most lopsided win in 25 years on Aug. 30, taking down Towson, 9-0.
• An impressive eight different players scored in the Towson victory, led by senior midfielder Sarah Deck with two goals and an assist. For the season, Deck ranks second on the team with six goals and is tied for fourth among conference players with 0.60 goals per game.
• Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after her efforts
against #3 Maryland and Towson. Mitchell made a career-high eight saves against the Terrapins, and made one save in 63 minutes vs. Towson to preserve the shutout.
• Temple has a first-year head coach in Marybeth Freeman, who spent the past five years as the head coach at Columbia University.
• The Owls have three team captains for the 2015 season, seniors Sarah Deck (midfielder), Taylor Shronk (defender) and Rachel Steinman (defender).
• Old Dominion holds a commanding 20-2-1 lead in the all-times series against Temple, but the Owls took
out the Monarchs 2-1 in last year’s BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. The regular season game had gone to ODU, 3-2.
• Temple and Liberty have faced each other just once before, a 3-0 win for the Owls at home on Oct. 28, 2011. That season was the first for Liberty as the Flames started their field hockey program that year.

The lasting memories of a season ago include both jubilation and some frustration for the veterans of the nationally ranked Temple field hockey team, but that sizable and experienced group may have just what it needs to reach the next rung of success in 2015. Under the inspired and enthusiastic direction of firstyear head coach Marybeth Freeman and her staff, the Owls are hoping to gain that slight edge they need to reach their goals. "The 2015 season is going to be an excellent opportunity to showcase all the new and exciting things we implemented during the spring season," said Freeman, "along with things we will continue to focus on in the preseason. The returning group has been extremely dedicated to enhancing their strength and conditioning, and are focused on the program's future hockey goals. The incoming class is energized and eager to join the solid foundation of TUFH." The Owls' senior class is an impressive group of 10 this year, and eight of 11 starters return from last season. Senior and All-Region/All-BIG EAST selection Alyssa Delp will help lead the offense in 2015, along with senior Tricia Light and junior Katie Foran. Senior Sarah Deck is a powerhouse in the midfield, where the Owls also expect to get major contributions from junior Paige Gross and sophomores Maiyah Brown and Rachael Mueller. Seniors Taylor Shronk and Rachel Steinman anchor the backfield, with senior Haley Mitchell leading the goalkeeping position after a strong spring season.
The incoming class, made up of five freshmen, rounds out the 26-member roster full of talent, leadership and a strong work ethic. "Everyone on this team has a role," said Freeman. "Having a role provides each team member the opportunity to service the team in a positive way. The foundation is laid and there are many opportunities this season to be successful in a variety of different areas. I know our student-athletes will continue to represent Temple University and our field hockey program in a positive way as we get ready to step onto the national stage." When Freeman was hired in March to lead the Owls, she set about compiling a staff that would share her vision and help the program reach its goals. "Having a new hockey staff is an exciting piece to the 2015 program," said Freeman. "Roz Ellis, a highly successful, experienced and knowledgeable backfield player and coach, will work directly with our deep defenders. Katie Gerzabek, a recent graduate, national champion and decorated attacker, will work hands-on with our front field players. Carissa Vittese, our director of operations, will provide our staff with valuable hockey feedback and will ensure everyone has everything needed to be successful off the field. We also have Molly Doyle returning as our volunteer assistant who brings her knowledge of Temple's rich tradition of hockey excellence. I couldn't be happier with the positional balance and diverse hockey mindsets within our staff."
TWO COMEBACK ATTEMPTS FALL SHORT The Owls have had comeback attempts fall short in each of their last two games, ultimately losing by just a single goal in each. Temple trailed 3-1 at #19 James Madison before scoring two of the game’s final three goals in the second half, but could not complete the comeback and lost 4-3 to the Dukes on the road.
Two days later, the Owls trailed 4-1 with 25 minutes remaining at American, but scored twice in the final 17 minutes to make it a one-goal game. The second goal came with less than three minutes to go, and Temple was unable to score the equalizer. FIRST HAT TRICK FOR DELP Senior Alyssa Delp, a starter for the Owls since her first game of her first season, recorded the first hat trick of her career on Sept. 18 at Monmouth. She scored twice in the first half helping Temple tie the Hawks at the break, and scored the game-winning goal in the second half in leading the Owls to a 4-2 victory. Her three goals came in just four shots on goal for the contest. For her efforts, Delp was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. TEMPLE CRUSHES THE TIGERS The Owls’ 9-0 win against Towson on Aug. 30 was one for the record books. The victory was the most lopsided in program history in 25 years, since the 1990 Owls took out Lehigh by the same score. While not verified, it is likely that Temple’s eight goal-scorers set a record for most players to score in a single game.
OWLS BEAT SAINT JOSEPH’S ON A LATE GOAL With less than three minutes remaining, junior Paige Gross scored on a cross from sophomore Hattie Kuhns to lift Temple to a 3-2 win over visiting Saint Joseph's on Sept. 7 at Geasey Field. It was the first home win of the 2015 season for the Owls, who were able to answer in the 68th minute after the Hawks had tied the game in the 65th minute. The contest between the city rivals was a heated one, especially down the stretch as a total of four green cards and three yellow cards were handed out in the second half. Temple's defense was forced to withstand seven Saint Joseph's penalty corners in just the first 15 minutes of the game, but the Owls kept it scoreless. Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell made three saves in that stretch and finished with six in the game.
MITCHELL EARNS FIRST BIG EAST AWARD The first BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week Award of the 2015 season was given to Temple senior Haley Mitchell after a strong opening weekend in goal for the Owls.
Mitchell began her senior campaign by posting a career-high eight saves against No. 3 Maryland on Aug. 28, keeping Temple in the game against the Terrapins in what ultimately ended in a 4-2 defeat. Two days later, Mitchell added one more save to her weekend total in the Owls' 9-0 rout of Towson. She played the complete game against Maryland, and all but seven minutes in helping earn a team shutout against Towson.

OWLS FACING EIGHT OF THE TOP 20 TEAMS . Temple has already played five teams ranked in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, and the Owls will face at least three more this season. Friday’s game at #15 Dominion will be followed by home games against #12 Liberty and #1 UConn.
OWLS LED BY HUGE SENIOR CLASS IN 2015 There are 25 members of Temple field hockey in 2015, and 10 of them are seniors. The group includes two fifth-year seniors in goalkeeper Haley Mitchell and back Rachel Steinman. Three of the seniors are the current leaders in points for the team, with Alyssa Delp at 22 points, Sarah Deck at 14 points and Tricia Light at 9 points heading into the Old Dominion game.
FREEMAN FAMILIAR WITH PENN Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman spent the past five seasons at Columbia, facing Colleen Fink's Penn team each year as fellow members of the Ivy League. The rivalry was a heated one, with Freeman's team earning 4-3 overtime wins in both 2014 and 2013, and a 3-2 overtime win in 2012. The Lions also topped the Quakers 5-1 in 2011. Columbia's only loss to Penn in Freeman's tenure was a 3-2 overtime defeat in 2010. TEMPLE EARNS BIG EAST ACADEMIC HONOR Temple field hockey was recognized with a 2014-15 BIG EAST Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point average in the sport.
The winners were chosen based on the 2014-15 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport. The field hockey program set a new record for the 2015 spring semester, recording a team GPA of 3.57 to lead the Temple athletics department.
"To excel as a student is one thing," said head coach Marybeth Freeman. "To excel on the field is another. But to have the drive, commitment and dedication to excel at both is something special. Having our team earn this award makes us incredibly proud and honored. This group has a true understanding of how we want our program represented and they help define our team's character and dedication to success."

TEMPLE HAS FIRST OVERSEAS PLAYER IN 22 YEARS Freshman Charlotte de Cuyper hails from Antwerp, Belgium, and is the first international player to be listed on a Temple field hockey roster since 1993. Liesbeth Hoek from the Netherlands was a sophomore on the team that year, but did not end up playing for the Owls after deciding to go back home. As a freshman, Hoek ranked fifth on the team with 10 total points.
Temple’s most notable international recruit was Caroline McWilliams, a three-time All-American from Northern Ireland who played for the Owls from 1980-1983. McWilliams ranks second alltime in career points and career goals, and third all-time in assists.
HEAD COACH MARYBETH FREEMAN
FIRST YEAR • OLD DOMINION ‘03 CAREER RECORD 49-46 (SEVENTH YEAR OVERALL)
M a r y b e t h Freeman, a fivetime NCAA Division I champion as a player and coach, was hired as the head field hockey coach of Temple University on March 10, 2015, tapped to take the reins of the highly-successful program that has been nationally ranked for the past two seasons. Freeman came to Temple after spending five seasons as the head field hockey coach for Columbia University, and was previously an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons, winning three national championships with the Terps. After leading Columbia to 12 wins in 2014, tying for the second-most in program history, Freeman was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year. Her 2014 squad finished with a record of 12-5, and junior
midfielder Christina Freibolt was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year as well as being named to the All-Region First Team and All-America Third Team. Freeman’s tenure at Columbia included a 10-win season in her first as head coach, and a pair of nine-win seasons in 2011 and 2012. The Lions’ schedules were among the most difficult in the nation for the past two seasons. She leaves Columbia after producing seven NFHCA All-Region selections over her five years with the program. While at Maryland, Freeman played an integral role in the team’s national titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008. After three seasons as an assistant coach, Freeman was promoted to associate head coach in 2007. The Terps also won three ACC titles in her time on staff, in 2005, 2008 and 2009. Among other responsibilities, Freeman was tasked with developing the Terps’ defense and goalkeeping unit. Three-time All-American Kathryn Mason led the nation in goals against average twice under Freeman’s
guidance, and was the first ever Terp goalkeeper to be honored as a First Team AllAmerican. Freeman has also served as the head goalkeeping and defense coach for the US Field Hockey High Performance MidAtlantic Region, in addition to working with the US Field Hockey Futures program. She is a 2003 graduate of Old Dominion University, and helped the Lady Monarchs win national titles in 1998 and 2000. The four-year starter also led her team to a Colonial Athletic Association title in each year of her collegiate career. In addition to her success on the field, Freeman excelled in the classroom as she was a four-year NFHCA Academic AllAmerican. Freeman earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from ODU in 2003, and earned her master’s in education from Maryland in 2008.
