The UTEP Life Skills program recently welcomed newly incoming freshman and transfer studentathletes at this year’s New Student-Athlete Orientation and Welcome Back BBQ on August 24th. Additionally, they were encouraged to participate in P.H.A.T. (Peers Helping Athletes Transition) Tuesdays where they learned to transition into university life with help from their fellow athletes. During these workshops, new student-athletes engaged in team building activities, ameliorated public presentation skills, and came together to identify strategies to create more awareness for safe alcohol use.
UTEP Gets a Fresh Face The UTEP Athletic Department recently hired a new Director of Student-Athlete Development who will spearhead the Life Skills initiatives and S.A.A.C. campaigns. Nicole Okolo, a former track and field studentathlete with the University of Alabama and Western Carolina University, came to UTEP after earning her second Master’s degree in Sport Business Management from UCF. Nicole has prior experience in program development and coordinating community service for student-athletes, as well as academic advising. She looks forward to advancing opportunities for student-athlete growth here at UTEP.

S.A.A.C. Spotlight The UTEP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) is a studentassembled organization comprised of representatives from each team. Members recently kicked off the soccer season by hosting a tent at the tailgate filled with fun games and coloring activities for kids. S.A.A.C. has plans to become a registered student organization (RSO) this year on campus in hopes of integrating more with the student-body. They are in the process of creating an official
constitution and submitting their application. Each year, Conference USA holds an initiative that raises money and canned food for local shelters. Last year, UTEP was crowned champions of C-USA’s “Let’s SAAC Hunger” competition. This year’s S.A.A.C. committee hopes to retain the title once again. S.A.A.C. hunger will be sponsoring the fundraising event during the week of November 8th-November 15th at all UTEP home games. They will also be
