THE MEMORIAL CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT SCHOLARSHIP
was established in 2004 by the Board of Trustees of the Funeral Service Foundation for deserving students of funeral service, and was created to honor industry greats who have blazed a trail in the profession.
Memorial Classic
Scholarship Johnson Consulting Group hosts the Memorial Classic Golf Tournament each year to raise money in support of the scholarships, which are awarded annually to selected students enrolled in an American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE)-accredited mortuary science program.
Past Honorees John Morrow, a licensed funeral director for over 40 years, began his career in1957 working in his family’s funeral home in Houston. When the firm was sold to Service Corporation International (SCI) in 1970, Morrow became a vice president of the company. He worked with SCI for the next four decades earning the title of executive vice-president heading up corporate development, the position from which he retired in 2000. Morrow traveled extensively through his career and into retirement creating lasting relationships along the way. He was known throughout the funeral service profession as a respected mentor, strong leader and friend to all.
Bill Bischoff was a longtime leader in the profession, serving as Vice President of Sales for Hillenbrand Industries for 20 years, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Aurora Casket Company for 10 years, and a consultant to Homesteaders Life Insurance Company and Johnson Consulting Group.
Dave Hirt had a life-long commitment to funeral service. He spent 33 years as a part of Batesville Casket Company, starting as a member of the sales department and, at the time of his retirement, President and CEO. He played a major role in the development of Johnson Consulting Group. He was a past board member of the Funeral Service Foundation.
Joe Weatherford’s commitment to the profession spanned nearly six decades. Throughout his career as a funeral director, Weatherford owned funeral homes in Oklahoma, Florida and Arkansas. Weatherford served as President of the Oklahoma Funeral Directors Association from 1970-1971 and was also appointed to the Oklahoma Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.

Up to two (2) $1,000 Memorial Classic Golf Tournament Scholarships are awarded annually.
The Candidate must submit a complete application package, which includes:
Eligibility Requirements The Candidate must be enrolled in, or accepted into, a mortuary science program at an ABFSE-accredited school. • To apply for the scholarship, the Candidate must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, for the Fall 2015 semester. • To receive the scholarship, the Candidate must be enrolled as a full- or part-time student during the Fall 2015 semester. • Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, religious beliefs, age, national origin, or disability.
• Enrollment Verification or Acceptance Letter New Students: Please send a copy of your official acceptance letter into an ABFSE-approved School. Returning Students: Please send an official statement from the ABFSE-approved school verifying your fullor part-time enrollment for the Fall 2015 Semester.
• Original Essay Submission
Must be a minimum of 500 and maximum of1,000 words.
• Completed Candidate Information Form
The form is included in this application package, and must be signed and dated.
Scholarship Terms & Guidelines • Foundation scholarships are subject to available funds, and are not renewable; a Candidate may only receive this award once. • Foundation academic scholarships are for mortuary science/funeral service study only. • Funding is sent directly to the school in Fall 2015; under no circumstances will the Funeral Service Foundation make a payment directly to the student. • Funding may be used for tuition and fees, books, and supplies. • In all correspondence related to the scholarship, the last four digits of the candidate’s social security number will serve as the application number; all names, employers, and any other distinguishing information will be removed from applications before they are considered for awards. • Alternates may be selected in the event that a scholarship recipient decides not to accept the award. • All award decisions of The Funeral Service Foundation are final.
• The Foundation has no loan programs, vocational grants or assistance for graduate study available. • Only completed applications will be considered. Incomplete applicant information and/or missing or unofficial transcripts will disqualify the applicant. • The Funeral Service Foundation will only confirm receipt of completed applications and reserves the right to eliminate from consideration unsigned or incomplete applications without further notice to the applicant. • If a student terminates his or her enrollment in the school for any reason, the remaining/ unused balance of the scholarship must be returned to the Foundation only, may not be transferred to another school, and may not be paid to the student personally. • Serious protracted illness or injury that would delay participation in the program may be considered reason for holding an award in reserve. Time limits and other restrictions may be set by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Other leaves of absence will be considered on an individual basis, and holding an award is not guaranteed.

Applying for more than one Foundation Scholarship?
