Kiwanis Club of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, Inc. Meets Tuesday, 6:30, Donauschwaben German Center, 7370 Columbia Road

D. Craig Barbee, Editor October 18, 2016 NEXT WEEK our speaker will be a representative of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. LAST WEEK our program came from the Spiritual Aims Committee as they presented their Layman of the Year. It would be difficult to think of a more deserving member to receive this honor than the one chosen by the committee: RON FAZULAK. He demonstrates his worthiness in many ways, most notably in running the annual free Thanksgiving dinner for the community (for which signup starts next week). Congratulations, Tweedledum! It has been the custom in our club that the recipient of the Layman of the Year makes a short speech the following year when the new award is presented, telling what it has meant to have received this honor. Last year’s winner was Monte Cox, who said that one of the things the award did for him was to bring him back to daily prayer. Attendance numbered 30; GEORGE BEHREND won the 50/50 prize of $21. TWO OTHER IMPORTANT items of business were conducted during the meeting. One of those was the presentation of the proposed budget, which the club members approved. In the absence of BOB MUSTEE who was out of town, DAVE POHLMAN made the presentation and necessary explanations. THE OTHER item was the induction of a new member. MARGIE KARL is now officially a Kiwanian; she will attend Tuesday meetings when she can, but mostly she will be at the club satellite meetings. She was presented to the club by DONNA WINTER. THE CLUB SATELLITE will meet at 8 AM this Friday, October 14, at a different location than usual: the Olmsted Community Center (The Village Bean is closed that day). Coffee and donuts will be provided. THE HOMECOMING PANCAKE BREAKFAST was a big success once again. Though attendance was quite as great as last year, more than 1300 meals were served. Donations were over $2900 and the placemat ads were completely sold out to the tune of $4500, so when all bills are paid, we could make up to $4000 profit. Many thanks to all who helped out, and especially to the chief organizer, CHRIS PARKER. THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE is still signing people up for two events. “Ales and Rails,” a beer-tasting trip on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad will happen on Saturday, November 5. The train will leave the Rockside station at 2 PM, go to Peninsula and then back again. Cost is $50 per person. The other event is a ride on Lolly the Trolley to view holiday lights on Saturday, December 3 at 7 PM. Cost for this will be $18 per person. For more info about either of these or to sign up, contact LEE FENRICH. THOSE WHO ARE ATTENDING this Sunday’s social event, the tour of the Haunted Mansfield Reformatory, should plan to be at the German Club parking lot no later than 4:30 on Sunday to ride the bus.

VOLUNTEERS are still needed for the vision and hearing screening at Falls-Lenox next week. One person is needed on Tuesday from 8-9:45 and one on Friday from 8-10:30. Call JIM LEHMAN.

Layman of the Year Ron Fazulak receives a plaque signifying his honor from former chair of the Spiritual Aims Committee John Somodi.

COMING EVENTS: Boy Scout Troop 201 will hold a Court of Honor for the new Eagle Scouts on Sunday, October 23, at 2 PM. The location will be announced once it is known exactly how many boys will be recognized. THE OHIO DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S dinner will be held on November 17 at The Renaissance. Cocktails will be available from 6-6:45 followed by dinner. More info is forthcoming. OUR CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY is definitely set for December 13 at The Renaissance. MONEY ISN’T EVERYTHING: The Indians are in the American League Championship Series starting Friday th with a payroll of $74 million, which ranks 27 out of 30 teams in the major leagues. The Yankees are sitting home watching with the highest payroll, a staggering $223 million, three times that of the Tribe.  QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Progress is impossible without change, and those that cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” – George Bernard Shaw * * * WEEKLY OPPORTUNITY ROSTER * * * TABLE TENDERS: GREETERS: TICKET SALES: INVOCATION: MONKEY TENDER: BACKUP: BEARER:
