SERMON NOTES

This week’s sermon TAKE ME TO THE RIVER, DROP ME IN THE WATER ROMANS 6:1-4 He who knew no sin died in the place of those of us who sin. And, spiritually, we died with him. He who lives forever raised us up with Him so that we can live forever.

Practical Concerns Regarding Baptism: 1. Baptism is for believers. 2. Baptism is the rite of passage for membership in the local church. 3. Baptism is symbolic of what Jesus did on the cross – salvation does not come by baptism in water but into Jesus. 4. Baptism is the expected norm for all believers, not optional.

Digging Deeper into the Message “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” –Romans 6:1-4 1.

What question is Paul answering in this passage? (verse 1)

2.

In your own words, explain why we shouldn’t sin any more, even though we are forgiven?

3.

What does it mean that we are baptized into Jesus’ death?

4.

According to verse 4, by what was Jesus raised from the dead?

5.

So what can we now walk in, according to the end of the passage?

6.

Are there any sins you need to repent of right now and instead choose to walk in newness of life?

Community Group ICEBREAKER:  Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions? Are there any practical ways the community group can help you keep your Resolutions? QUESTIONS:  In your own words, explain salvation by grace through faith in Jesus.  Which type of sinners do you have difficulty accepting can be forgiven if they call out to Jesus? How does this reveal pride in your heart?  Do you have any past sins that you feel are too big for God to completely forgive? Are any of your past sins hanging over you, even though you know they have been forgiven?  How would you answer the question, “Why should I be baptized?” to a new Christian or a child? What does baptism mean, and why do we have to do it if it’s not what saves us?  Tell your baptism story – how old were you? What did it mean to you at the time? If you have not been baptizedwhy not?  Read the first two points on the MAP. Since Jesus died and washed away all of our sins, past, present, and future, then what’s stopping us from sinning any time we want? Won’t it be forgiven?  Read Romans 6:1-4. What does Paul say is the reason we don’t sin anymore?  Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Galatians 2:20. If we have been crucified with Christ and now Christ lives in us, then why do we still want to sin?  Read the Practical Concerns Regarding Baptism on the MAP.  Which of these points surprises you?  Did this sermon bring up any questions or concerns for you? APPLICATION: Spend some time praying for each other and the 10:16 team.
