Thursday 20th August 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians, The Year 1J children presented a wonderful prayer liturgy based around the Feast of The Assumption of Mary. As a Catholic community we have a special devotion to Mary, which was illustrated beautifully by the Year 1 children. Book Week Next week St Joseph’s celebrates Book Week. This is a great time to promote the enjoyment and importance of reading and books in the lives of children. A big thank you to our school librarian, Belinda Walker, for coordinating the book week activities. A reminder that the children are invited to dress up as a book character on Wednesday 26th August. Garbutt Magpies Tomorrow 18 St Joseph’s boys from Years 5 and 6 will participate in the second annual Garbutt Magpies AFL Competition. St Joseph’s is the only Catholic school invited to participate. This carnival is part AFL competition, but mostly a program to provide mentors for Indigenous Youth. The boys have been training hard and looking forward to the day. They have received a reminder note and have promised to pack their footy bag tonight. Parents are most welcome to come along to support the team. The games are being held at Murray AFL Grounds. The boys are travelling to and from the competition by bus. Opti-Minds Congratulations to the students for the hard work they have put into this year’s Opti-Minds Competition. Thank you to Jacqui Loader and other staff members for coordinating and supporting the students. Health Check Thank you to parents who have alerted us to reports of worms in their children’s system. As you would all appreciate, children are in close contact with each other. Could parents and guardians please check their children for worms and treat as directed. We all need to be vigilant to stop the spread for the health of our children. Japanese Speaking Competition Congratulation to Jade de Lange, Pip Negri, Isabella Demetriou, Samara James and Daniel Franettovich who represented St Joseph’s at the Annual Townsville and District Japanese Speaking Competition. A big thank you to our Japanese teacher, May Ito, for coordinating and supporting these students. Love God Love One Another Patrick Dempsey [email protected] Mobile: 0457785639 (AH)

Prayer Garden Upcoming Dates: 5pm Sunday 30th August - Youth Mass 8:45am Tuesday 1st September - Father’s Day Year 6, 3M, 1B & Prep L 8:35am Wednesday 2nd September - Prep R Father’s Day Assembly Pink and Purple Day: We had a lovely day on Friday with most of the school dressed in purple and pink. Year 4C and 6K provided a wonderful spread of goodies that were sold. Thank you to both of these classes and the whole school for their generosity. We raised a whopping $778 for the Relay for Life teams. You can still donate individually to the teams - Love Over Cancer. Library Is Open Two Mornings a Week: On Tuesday it was lovely to see a mother read to not only her child, but other children. We would like to encourage parents to spend a few minutes before school reading a book with their children. The Library is open on Tuesday and Friday morning from 8 - 8:30am. The children are allowed to come and do homework or read a book. If you have a child who struggles to complete their homework during the week, I am more than happy to encourage them to come and assist them with completing their homework. Opti-minds 2015: Over the last 6 weeks I have been working with 20 dedicated Year 5 and 6 students, who have been staying after school and coming to school on the weekends. In this time they have been preparing to compete in Opti-minds. On Wednesday 26th August from 11 - 1pm these children will be performing their long term challenge for class groups. Parents and friends are welcome to come and watch these performances. Then on Sunday 30th August the children will perform these and participate in a spontaneous challenge. No matter the outcome on competition day, I am extremely proud of their dedication and hard work! The Assumption of Blessed Mother Mary: On Wednesday Year 1J celebrated the Assumption of Blessed Mother Mary at assembly. As part of our Catholic tradition Mary is held in high respect, as she was especially chosen to be the mother of Jesus. There are many days throughout the year where we celebrate the life of Mary. On this occasion we celebrate her birth and her special place in heaven as the mother of Jesus. Please remember in your prayers: In your prayers can you please remember the following people: Keir Family Jenny Roberts family Sacramental candidates 2015 Many blessings for the week ahead,

Jacqui Loader [email protected] A Magnificat of Waiting ... My soul reflects quietly on your fullness, and my spirit grows stronger in the hope of your promise, God my redeemer, because you have filled me with the knowing that you are alive within me. Yes, day by day through the course of time my awareness of the call to blessed fulfillment increases for you have done great things in me. Holy is this time, and patience is your gift to all who nurture the seed of your love. You have changed my life; I was so confident in my unknowing. You have deflected my fervent thrust toward iron-clad goals, and spread before me your vision of fragile simplicity. My longing to be a healing and reconciling person to your people is affirmed within the daily comings and goings of my life; my illusions of my own wholeness are mercifully revealed. You are here now in this seeming emptiness of waiting, remembering your intent, ... according to the promise made in the beginning of time ... remembering your intent to reach through the work of my life that your fullness may be known now, in our time. WORD STUDY Week 7

Term 3 2015

Spelling Focus: The phonogram ”ay” is used at the end of a word to say “ā”. e.g.to-day, may, pay. “ai” never goes at the end of an English word. If “a” is at the end of an word, it makes the sound “ŭ” e.g. extra “ay” is used at the end of a syllable to say ”ā”. This rule helps with spelling as it teaches us to say “ay” at the end of a word. Note: when spelling, “eigh” or “ey” is seldom used. e.g. neigh, weigh, sleigh. “ey’ is used in only a few more words. e.g. they, obey, grey, survey. This rule also helps with reading, as it as it teaches us to “a” as “ŭ” at the end of a word. At Home: Make a list of all the “ay” words you can think of- Monday, away, play….keep going! In your reading book, try to find some “ai” words- where in the word do you find it?

Grammar Focus: Punctuation – Commas Commas are used: ❥ to separate words in a list. I like apples, pears, plums and

grapes.

❥ to separate a beginning phrase. Later that day, we went for

a swim.

❥ to separate a beginning clause. When I broke my leg, I used

crutches.

❥ to separate an embedded phrase. Jess, waving her

umbrella, hurried away.

❥ to separate an embedded clause. My dog, which is old now, still does tricks. ❥ to separate spoken and unspoken words. “A dingo is a wild dog,” said Bradley. At Home: Write a sentence for each of the comma uses listed above. Have a go at this quiz http://www.timeforkids.com/homework-helper/grammar-wizard/commas

Notes: Tuckshop will be selling food with a Seuss flavour during this week. Dress up theme: ‘Books Light up our world’ What book gave you that light bulb moment?

Library Matters http://readiscover1.blogspot.com.au/

Book Week Fancy Dress: It is finally here. Children are fairly excited about this event. Parents please keep the morning of Aug 26th free and enjoy some literary entertainment. The theme this year is: ‘Books light up our World’. Check out my blog to find out the background to why we celebrate Book Week. Keep costumes simple…let kids be creative with what they have at home. See attached Flyer for event program. Book Week competitions: Children will be designing costumes for their favourite character using a paper doll. The entry form is available at school. These will be discussed during in library lessons. Reading Hour: Year 3 celebrated reading hour with Antonio Winterstein. He read the story ‘Silly Billy’ by Anthony Browne. What did you read for reading hour?

Cody, Thomas, Sophie and Bree shared their favourite books.

Proud Year Three students show off their masterpieces.

Mosaic fun with Year Three. After the completion of our beautiful Fr. Mick Peters’ Prayer Garden, we have decided to add some colour to the Year One garden walls. The Year Ones and Threes have begun learning how to create a mosaic. All St. Joseph’s students will have the chance to contribute to the project and we welcome any assistance from other family members, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you can spare some tiles we would love some donations – especially coloured ones.

Wonderful Mrs. Shan Lee (Sophie 1J) helping Year One with mosaics.

Year One children concentrating on their ceramic labyrinths.

Year Five students designing and sewing their self-portrait puppets.

We love seeing Mr. Thomson in the Art Room. The Preps have been looking at the assemblages by Louise Nevelson. Year Two students were inspired by Strand Ephemera to make some cardboard caravans for their own Grand Tour. Year Six children are learning about ceramics as they make clay pinch pot monsters.

The fun continues at Art Club on Tuesday at second break. Ms. Athena Costopoulos [email protected]
