The MA program in Middle East and Islamic Studies (MA-MEIS), an interdisciplinary MA degree currently housed in CHSS, rather than any individual CHSS department, proposes to offer an 18-credit graduate certificate in Middle East and Islamic Studies. The graduate certificate program proposed here would require that students take four of the existing core courses for the MA-MEIS program (MEIS 500, HIST 575, GOVT 731, and RELI 644), as well as two electives designated as electives for the MAMEIS program. Since those enrolled in the graduate certificate program will enroll in courses already regularly taught for the MA-MEIS, the program does not require the creation of new courses, and in the short term is unlikely to require the hiring of additional faculty to meet the demand for these courses Interest and enrollment in the MA-MEIS program has been growing steadily in the two years since it was established, and the first full cohort is expected to graduate in Spring 2015. Some students admitted in Spring 2013, prior to the first full cohort, have already successfully graduated from the program and are applying what they learned in professional positions in their field. Given that our program has attracted a some local professionals already working in the government, military, and nonprofit sectors, it is likely that a graduate certificate in this field, which requires only 18 credits of coursework and can be completely relatively quickly, even while working full-time, will find a significant constituency in the Northern Virginia and wider DC metro area. It hardly needs to be mentioned that the political and religious situation in the Middle East and broader Islamic world has become increasingly complex and unpredictable, and remains a source of both concern and interest for policymakers and other professionals in our area. Since the graduate certificate program proposed here relies on courses and teaching faculty already employed in the MA-MEIS program, it will allow GMU to meet the growing demand for knowledge and understanding of the Middle East and Islamic world among area professionals who do not have the time or resources for fulltime graduate study, without having to procure additional resources.

Proposed catalog copy: Graduate Certificate in Middle East and Islamic Studies An interdisciplinary graduate certificate program that allows student to examine the complex issues involved in understanding the Middle East and the broader Islamic world from a variety of perspectives. Students study both contemporary and historical developments in these regions; they take core courses in various disciplines, including political science, history, and religious studies, and have the opportunity to take elective courses in an even broader set of disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, literature, and art history. The program requires the completion of 18 credit hours of coursework: 12 credits of core coursework (MEIS 500, HIST 575, GOVT 731, RELI 644), and 6 credit hours of elective courses in the study of the Middle East and Islamic world. These elective choices will be drawn from the same list of elective options associated with the MA-MEIS program.
