Students a end Summer Academy programs Monday through Friday, from 7:15 a.m. to 12:30p.m. The typical Summer Academy student accomplishes the same amount of work in one daythat would be completed in one week’s me during the regular school year. A endance is taken three (3) mes daily; at the beginning of the day (7:15 a.m.), a er the first break (8:40a.m.), and a er the lunch break (11:05 a.m.). If a student arrives a er the first break, or is signed-out prior to the lunch break, it will be counted as an absence. Any combina on of absences and or tardies not exceeding 2.0 are allowed per session. Anything a er the second absence, including a tardy will result in the withdrawal from class, and the student will receive NO credit for the course. One tardy equals 1/3 of an absence, two tardies equals 2/3 of an absence and three (3) tardies equals one absence. An example is two absences and one tardy equals two and 1/3 absences, (student will lose credit for class). Parents will be contacted when a student is absent or tardy. THERE ARE NO EXCUSED ABSENCES IN SUMMER SCHOOL. Please provide accurate phone numbers where a parent/guardian can be contacted, or messages can be le , as every effort will be made to no fy a parent/guardian when a student is absent or tardy.

Bus transporta on will be provided from the following pick-up points: Tolleson Union High School, Westview High School, La Joya Community High School, and Sierra Linda High School. Based on this structure, transporta on is not provided for the host school. Student’s pick up and drop off mes will be available online and at their home school. Permission for students to drive and park at the Summer Academy program is a privilege extended to any licensed driver complying with state law and district policy. This permission may be revoked at any me for any viola on of the rules governing driving, behavior, or a endance.

3rd Semester Summer Academy General Informa on
Experience 3rd Semester Summer Academy is open to any incoming ninth grade (freshman) through twelfth grade (senior) students. Students may take one class per session and earn 1/2 credit for the class. In general, Summer Advancement courses offered 1st session are equivalent to the first semester of the regular school year, and courses offered 2nd session are equivalent to the second semester of the regular school year. Most Summer Success courses will be offered in both sessions; however, there are some exceptions. Please refer to the Course Offerings section inside the corresponding brochure for specific program descriptions. Students who do not attend a Tolleson Union High School District (TUHSD) school are welcome to attend the TUHSD’s 3rd Semester Summer Academy program. Students should be aware that the pace of Summer Academy classes can be intense. Students are completing approximately one week of school work in one class day. With most classes, students can expect homework on a daily basis. It is the desire of the Summer Academy staff to offer students the opportunity to make-up failed credits (deficiencies) or to complete course requirements ahead of schedule. Furthermore, it is the goal of the Summer Academy staff to maintain the high educational standards set forth by the Tolleson Union High School District throughout the 3rd Semester Summer Academy. Achieving this goal is a team effort involving the student, parent/guardian, and teachers. EXAMS & CLASS WORK All class work must be completed and turned in to the teacher by the last day of the session. Progress reports will be sent home the second week of each session to the parent/guardian of students at risk of failing a course. Final exams WILL NOT be administered early by any teacher, NOR will exams be administered AFTER the session is over. AN “INCOMPLETE” GRADE WILL NOT BE ISSUED FOR A COURSE. All students comple ng a Summer Academy course will receive a le er grade for the class (there are no Pass/Fail courses in the Summer Academy program). Report cards will be mailed to all students the Monday following the last week of the program. Students who do not a end a TUHSD school, will receive a report card mailed to their home school (please provide the address of the student’s school where indicated on the registra on form). It is the responsibility of the student’s home school to request an official transcript for classes taken.

Academic Progress Checks: One of the responsibili es of the Summer Online teacher is to monitor student progress to make sure that academic progress is being made. Academic progress is one of the major focuses of online learning and students are expected to make “reasonable progress”. Since instruc on may be individualized to meet the needs of the student’s progress, reasonable progress will be determined by how well a student ac vely engages in the learning process and masters the learning objec ves. On-line learning is not for all students, it requires basic academic skills and a level of commitment, mo va on, organiza onal skills, and self-direc on similar to the level required by college students.
Summer Online The TUHSD Summer Online program provides students with opportunities to obtain high school credit through a hybrid/ blended learning model. These courses are taught by highly qualified TUHSD teachers who monitor courses, provide off-line assignments, answer questions, lead small groups, enter grades, and communicate course content and student progress to parents. The teachers are dedicated to providing your child with a successful online learning experience he/she will need after high school. Every TUHSD online course requires a number of face to face sessions which students must attend in order to receive credit in the course. In addition, all assessment must be taken in school during their schedule testing time. Students will receive their individual summer schedule during the first week of Summer Academy. Students, who are highly motivated, have good time management skills, and can work independently usually experience the most success in this setting. Online courses in the Summer Academy program requires a strong commitment from students. Just like campus-based courses, the timeline for completion is condensed and requires significant time and dedication to coursework each day. To successfully complete and gain mastery of subject matter, students should plan to spend a minimum of five hours per day on online coursework to finish their course and take their final exam before the last day of the summer session.
INSURANCE The TUHSD is unable to provide medical insurance coverage for
summer school students. The parent or guardian is responsible for any medical fees related to a summer school injury or illness.
Course Selec on To ensure that the student takes the appropriate courses, students must consult their school’s guidance advisor prior to signing up for a course. Some classes offered require prerequisites and require a guidance advisor’s signature.

Each progress report card is designed to assess how your child is doing at the midway point of the 3rd semester program. It’s our goal to help your child have a successful summer academy experience. Make sure that you receive a progress report from your child’s teacher. If you do not receive a progress report, request one.
