TOWN OF LANTANA POSITION DESCRIPTION LIBRARYLIBRARY ASSISTANT Part Time Reports to Library Director

FLSA Non-Exempt Position No Benefits

JOB SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Library Director, the part-time Library Assistant performs library work of a routine nature which requires application of clerical and skilled techniques to varied library functions. The Assistant may be in charge of the library during evening hours. The Assistant must demonstrate tact, friendliness, and discretion in helping the library’s users. The Assistant will be assigned shifts and types of duty according to the needs of the department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in this classification. Assists patrons with inquiries and use of library equipment, including public access internet and word processing stations. Charges and discharges circulation materials, handles overdue notices. Registers new patrons, collects and records payments for non-resident borrowers’ cards. Affixes pockets, plates, property markings, plastic book jackets to new materials for circulation. Opens and closes library, arranges tools and materials for daily use, and monitors the library’s physical condition as necessary. Maintains various assigned records. Shelves books, periodicals, and other materials and maintains materials in proper order on shelves. Trains new library volunteers, Troubleshoots library’s web based automation system and liaises with its vendor(s), Performs related duties as requested by the Library Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidate must possess a High School diploma or equivalent. Completion of at least one year of higher education or current enrollment in college or university preferred. Computer literacy (e.g., familiarity with Microsoft Windows, word processing software, and the Internet) preferred. Experience in a library or other public service position requiring interaction with the public in occasionally stressful situations.
