TriFold Wallet 7x12 Hoop
Our ‘In the Hoop Trifold Wallet’ is made completely in your hoop, has slots for 4 credit cards, a fully lined zippered pocket for change, etc, and a pocket for a checkbook or money. It folds neatly and secures with a snap.
~~~~~ 2 fabrics were used in our sample. Fabric 1 (main fabric ~ Blue/brown/green batik) was used for the outside and inside pieces. Fabric 2 (tan batik) was used for the credit card & checkbook pockets and the lining for the zippered pocket. This design is not suited for directional fabric. We use spray (lightly) to secure all pieces unless noted otherwise. READ THROUGH INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING The fabric pieces needed will be referred to by letters A ~ J These pieces are listed under Supplies Needed below in the order they are used in the design. It is important to use the supplies listed in this design. If you want to add an optional fabric loop to attach hardware and a strap, make the loop first. More info regarding this option is on page 12.
~~~~~ Pay attention to the photos in the instructions. Have your hoop orientated as shown. Hoop poly mesh stabilizer (soft cutaway) Stitch step 1 onto the stabilizer. This is a placement guide for the zipper.
Place the zipper, right side up, centered inside of the guide lines with the pull on the left side. The pull and the stop should be outside of the hoop. Tape the zipper just along the edge to hold it in place.
2
Stitch step 2. This step secures the zipper to the stabilizer. Remove tape after stitching step 2.
Turn the hoop to the back side. Center piece A right side down, with one long edge even with the bottom edge of the zipper tape. Secure in place.
3
Turn the hoop to the front side. Center piece B right side down, with one long edge even with the bottom edge of the zipper tape. Secure in place.
Stitch step 3. This step stitches the fabrics to the zipper. On the front side of the hoop, fold piece B down and secure.
In the next steps, you will be placing the credit card pockets. Measure ½” down from the fold at the top of piece B. Center pocket piece C with the fold at the top along the ½” mark. Secure the pocket with tape along the fold.
4
Stitch step 4. This step will stitch the pocket on along the bottom. Remove tape. Measure ¼” down from the top fold of pocket C and center pocket piece D with the fold at the top along this mark. Secure the pocket with tape along the fold.
Stitch step 5. This This step stitches the dividing lines between the pockets. Remove tape.
5
On the front side of the hoop, place piece E right side down with one long edge even with the bottom of pocket D. Make sure E is even with the bottom edge of the pocket D NOT with the bottom of the piece under the pockets. You will see a small bit of fabric B below where E is placed. Secure in place.
Stitch step 6. This step sews down piece E. Fold E down and secure.
6
Measure down ¾” from the seam of piece E and center pocket piece F along this mark with the fold of F at the top. Tape in place.
Stitch step 7. This step secures the pocket at both sides. This stitching will show in the finished wallet.
7
Turn the hoop to the back side. Fold piece A down and secure.
Center piece G right side down with one long edge even with the top of the zipper tape.
8
Turn the hoop to the front side. Center piece H right side down with one long edge even with the top edge of the zipper tape. Secure in place.
Stitch step 8. This step sews the fabrics to the zipper. Fold piece H up and secure.
9
Turn the hoop to the back side. Lift up piece G so you can see the zipper under the stabilizer. Carefully trim away the stabilizer from the back of the zipper. It’s easier to do it now than when the wallet is done. Trim the stabilizer out to the edges as shown below.
Fold piece H back down as it was!
10
Make sure pieces A & H are laying smooth and flat and put the hoop back on your machine. Stitch step 9. This sews a decorative row on piece E just below the seam.
Unzip the zipper half way as shown by the white arrow in the photo below. Stitch step 10. This step sews a line at the bottom of the hoop.
11
*Optional: If you want to add a loop to add hardware and a strap, add it now. Make a 3” fabric strap. Fold the strap in half. Place the strap on the front side of the hoop on the LEFT hand side as shown below. Have the fold of the loop even with the credit card slot stitching. And the top of the pocket. Tape in place.
Center piece I right side down on top of the hoop. Center piece J (warm & natural) on top of I.
12
Stitch step 11. This step stitches the wallet together leaving an opening at the bottom. Remove the design from the hoop. Trim the warm & natural close to the stitching all around except at the opening. This is to reduce bulk in the seam.
Trim around the design ¼” from the stitching except at the bottom leave ½”. If you add the fabric loop, do not cut the ends off. Clip corners diagonally.
13
Trim the excess layers from the opening. Leave the pieces that form the opening.
Turn the wallet to the right side. Push out the corners, round out the top curve and push out the sides. Turn the raw edges at the bottom in. Press the wallet.
14
Time to install the snap. The male snap will be installed at the top of the wallet. The male part of the snap will be on the inside. From the center of the curved top, measure down 1/4”. Place the edge of the snap here.
Place a checkbook into the checkbook pocket and credit cards into the slots. You are doing this to determine the placement for the female snap.
15
Fold the bottom of the wallet up. Make sure the turned in edges are even.
Fold the top of the wallet down.
16
Make sure the wallet overlaps 1” on the edges.
Mark where the snaps need to go. The female snap will be installed from the inside of the wallet. The female part of the snap will be on the outside of the wallet.
17
Make sure the folded in edges at the opening are even. Using a ladder stitch (you can google for it) close the opening. The ladder stitch is easy to do and makes an almost invisible closing.
