TRUGLO PWR-DOT Archery Sight with STEADY-DOT Technology Tl hey did it once. They changed archery. How many times have you heard someone claim that their latest gear wonder will change the face of archery? Most often, it’s a boast that falls flat. But not always. In 1994, Paul LoRocco and daughter Lorraine Hellinghausen of TRUGLO introduced a revolutionary sight pin to archery––a fiber-optic pin––and that pin did forevermore change the world of archery. Paul, Lorraine and the TRUGLO team have been perfecting archery sights and a host of other archery accessories ever since. For several years, the TRUGLO duo has been teasing me with hints of yet another startling archery innovation. Now, in 2009, they’re finally ready to launch the new PWR-DOT Archery Sight with STEADY-DOT Technology.

The new TRUGLO PWR-DOT Archery Sight could change the way bowhunters view hunting sights. It’s a red-dot-type sight with a steady, calming difference.

We live in an electronic age. There’s no disputing that, even in the bowhunting field. Laser rangefinders, scouting cameras, LED flashlights, GPS units, electronic calls, handheld radios, sight lights, lighted nocks and more are now all as commonplace on the bowhunting landscape as sharp broadheads and camo. Today, we carry face paint and batteries without giving either a second thought. Yet the world of electronic red-dot archery sights has expanded but slowly. Typically, red-dot sights are non-magnifying optical sights featuring an illuminated aiming dot.

In use, a quality red-dot sight allows the user to see a bright red dot superimposed on the target. A red-dot sight is generally shot with both eyes open, the target-and-dot image appears simultaneously in a huge field of view and precise aiming is both very fast and easy to do. Those are the advantages. The characteristic disadvantage of most red-dots, however, has long been that the illuminated dot jiggles around like a Mexican jumping bean. In fact, the dot jumps and darts so much while aiming that many archers find it distracting, even maddening. TRUGLO has been working on a solution for five years. The amazing result is the newfor-2009 TRUGLO PWR-DOT Archery Sight with patent-pending STEADY-DOT Technology. Paul and Lorraine can walk you through the space-age optical magic behind that technology, but what you really want to know is that it works. Boy, does it work! I was recently privileged to test an early production model of the new TRUGLO PWR-DOT Sight. I came away awed and impressed. I’ve shot red-dot sights before, on bows, handguns and shotguns. Many handled and shot great, except for that annoying jiggle-and-jump thing. To test the new TRUGLO PWR-DOT, I switched the sight back and forth between three state-of-the-art 2009 compound bows and shot lots of arrows, indoors and out and from 20 to 80 yards. The instantly obvious thing is that the illuminated dot in this new-age TRUGLO sight doesn’t jump. In fact, it sits as still as any conventional pin! name. The easy-to-see illuminated dot sits centered in the big field of view, superimposed like it doesn’t have a care in the world right on the spot you want to hit. It may be the most relaxing way to aim I’ve ever seen. And yet, it also seems super precise at all distances. At 20 yards, the illuminated dot is perfectly sized to make the most precise of shots. More precise, I would say, than most conventional sight pins. At 80 yards, the dot is still nicely sized to split hairs. The TRUGLO PWR-DOT is surprisingly clean and trim. It looks like it belongs on a compound bow. From the mounting holes, PWR-DOT extended just 5 inches forward, which is less than many of today’s most sophisticated hunting sights. At the same time, this new sight seems rugged and beefy enough to withstand the rigors of any bowhunt. Sighting in each of the test bows with the new PWR-DOT Sight proved very easy. Simple slide-and-lock windage and elevation adjustments are provided. The elevation system is particularly easy. Using just one hand, all you do is loosen a single knob and slide the sight’s frame up or down to adjust for different shot distances. A glow-in-the-dark yardage tape records all distance settings.

In yet another innovative stroke, TRUGLO offers the PWR-DOT with either a red or green aiming dot. My eyes preferred the green dot. For me, the green dot seemed brighter on dark targets (like buckskin) in dim light. Your preference may vary. The TRUGLO PWR-DOT Archery Sight operates on one small 3V-CR2032 battery, which is included. Grocery and camera stores everywhere will have replacements. A convenient power wheel turns the sight on and also adjusts the intensity of the illuminated dot. Will the new TRUGLO PWR-DOT Sight with its revolutionary STEADY-DOT Technology change the archery sighting world? We’ll have to wait and see on that. For now, though, the remarkable new TRUGLO PWR-DOT Archery Sight offers serious bowhunters an easy, relaxing and very precise aiming system to go with all those other electronic tools that are making our days in the woods and mountains so much more enjoyable.
