COLOR ANALYSIS BASICS Unit 2.5 | Technical Training

COLOR ANALYSIS HISTORY • 1810- German philosopher Johann Wolfgang van Goethe published ‘Theory of colours’— an intensive study of color. • Late 1800’s-1960’s- Two German artists, Johannes Itten and Josef Albers expounded upon the principles and published “The Art of Color” (1961) and “The Interaction of Color” (1963). Itten proposed a natural correspondence between the four seasons of the year. • 1940’s- Suzanne Caygill, pioneer of color analysis and image consulting, developed a visual system to determine an individual’s best colors and styles according to skin, hair, and eye pigmentation based on seasons • 1978- Bernice Kentner, a licensed cosmetologist, published “Color Me A Season,” emphasizing that it is skin color (not hair or eye color) from which the season coloring is discovered • 1981- Carole Jackson popularized the idea in her book “Color Me Beautiful.” It was a pop-culture phenomenon because she implemented a color system less complicated than Caygil’s. From there, she began a direct sales company which sold swatch packets and cosmetics.
