WHEREAS, modeled after Sanctuary Cities, Sanctuary Campuses are colleges and universities that have policies to protect students who are undocumented immigrants; WHEREAS, Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Lawrence, and Somerville are already considered Sanctuary Cities within Massachusetts alone and there are many more cities all over the country that are declared Sanctuary Cities; WHEREAS, Boston abides by the Trust Act which prohibits the interrogation and or the detainment of someone based on their immigration status by law enforcers; WHEREAS, the following are proposed policies for Sanctuary Campuses to follow: “Not allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers onto campus without a warrant, the refusal of campus police to enforce immigration law, not sharing student immigration status with ICE, providing tuition support, including in-state tuition rates at public universities to students with DACA status, providing distance-learning options for deported students to complete their degrees, and providing confidential legal support to students with immigration law questions and issues”; WHEREAS, the University of Massachusetts Boston is a very diverse campus of over 17,000 students from all over the world and whose foreign student population has risen exponentially in the past couple of years; WHEREAS, given the divisive politics of our current President, many students, faculty, and staff have expressed concerns for “marginalized groups,” such as undocumented immigrants and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students; WHEREAS, the University of Massachusetts Boston should hereby declare itself a Sanctuary Campus to ensure the safety of its students, and to promote and encourage the inclusiveness of students regardless of national origin, race, religion, sexual identity or immigration status; WHEREAS, Boston University’s student government has already passed legislation in support of a petition calling for their university to become a Sanctuary Campus; WHEREAS, the University of Massachusetts Boston Faculty Council has already passed a motion requesting the Administration to declare the University of Massachusetts Boston a Sanctuary Campus; WHEREAS, self-declared Sanctuary Campuses include: Portland State University, Reed College, Wesleyan University, Pitzer College, Santa Fe Community College, University of Pennsylvania, Connecticut College, Drake University, Swarthmore College, and counting; BE IT RESOLVED, that the Undergraduate Student Government commits to creating a safe and enjoyable academic experience that promotes the protection, inclusion, and non-discrimination of all students, regardless of their immigration status.
