UNIVERSITY HOUSING
UNLIM IT ED P O S S I B I LI T IE S W INTER B REAK GUID E CLOSING Campus housing will be closed during winter break. Freshmen residents must leave for break by noon, Saturday, Dec. 12. Continuing & Transfer residents must leave for break by noon, Monday, Dec. 14. Residence halls and apartments will reopen at noon, Saturday, Jan. 2. Please plan your return accordingly – early arrivals cannot be accommodated. Plan to vacate your room 24 hours after your last final. Advisors will conduct safety and maintenance checks of each room for fire and safety hazards and to ensure that empty spaces are ready for reassignment. Leave your personal belongings, but remember to take any valuables you need – medications, tickets, IDs. You won’t be able to enter your room during the break, except in an emergency and for a fee. For emergencies, residents may make arrangements to access their rooms for a minimum charge of $36 by calling Housing Administration. Access is not available evenings and weekends. Residents who enter their rooms unauthorized will be assessed a minimum improper entry fee of $36, a key core charge of $75, and may be subject to community standards action. Cal Poly is not liable for items left in campus housing. CLEANING • Unplug electrical appliances & heaters. • Keep the fridge plugged in and turned to the lowest setting. • Lock windows & doors. • Close drapes & blinds. • Remove perishables. • Toss trash and recyclables. • Donate unwanted non-perishable and canned food items and clean clothing in the bins located in your hall lobbies and apartment community centers.
PARKING Parking regulations are enforced throughout campus housing. Guests of residents may park in general spaces with a valid permit. Parking and loading/unloading is not permitted in fire lanes, state vehicle and CSD spaces, driveways, at service gates or along campus roads, including Grand Avenue and Klamath Lane. MAIL Mail received by Cal Poly over the break will be distributed Monday, Jan. 4, with the exception of packages, which will be available for pick-up at Canyon Post in PCV. Sequoia Package Center will be closed. If you are leaving Cal Poly, remember to change your mailing address. Change-of-address cards are available at the front desk of your hall or apartment community and at Canyon Post. HOLIDAY DECORATIONS Fire safety concerns prevents us from allowing Christmas trees, holiday lights, pine/evergreen wreaths and candles in campus housing. As well, spray snow is not permitted on windows or doors, and decorations may not be hung from doors. GETTING ROOMMATE READY If you have a vacancy, clean the common areas and return open bed spaces to move-in ready condition. New students will be assigned to these vacancies. Advisors will conduct safety and maintenance checks for hazards and to be sure empty spaces are ready for assignment. If you are in a shared room and do not currently have a roommate, clear the unassigned area of the room before you leave to avoid being billed. STAYING FOR BREAK? If you signed a housing license agreement to stay in Cerro Vista Apartments during winter break, an email will be sent to you regarding your stay. Your CSD is a resource for questions. CHANGING ROOMS Residents interested in moving rooms, if available, can do so until Friday, Dec. 4 – the end of dead week. Room changes will not occur during finals week. Residents who are not able to move by Dec. 4 can arrange for a “check out for reassignment.” To begin the room change process, contact your CSD. CANCELLING HOUSING Residents who plan to withdraw from Cal Poly or will be participating in a study abroad, internship or other program away from campus need to provide a written 30-day notice of the intent to cancel the Housing License Agreement available at Housing Administration. There is no penalty for students withdrawing from Cal Poly with a 30-day written notice provided. The last day to give a full 30-day notice is Friday, Dec. 4. Residents must check out by the winter closure dates noted above.
