So what does a large, Australian mining outfit and your cooperative have in common? Believe it or not, quite a bit. On September 30, two executives from Minemakers Limited visited the dry fertilizer and UAN facilities in Marble Rock. Minemakers Limited is developing the Wonarah phosphate deposit in the central region of the Northern Territory, believed to be the largest conventional sedimentary deposit in Australia. In doing so, they hope to become a significant force in the global phosphate and fertilizer industry.
“We were happy to show Neville and Paul our facilities,” said Kent Appler, Viafield CEO. “It’s great to be able to share some of our knowledge of fertilizer manufacturing and application with individuals from a company on the other side of the globe. They were pretty awestruck by our level of technology and I think it gave them insight for their business back in Australia.” To see more pictures from the visit, please visit the Viafield Facebook page at www.facebook.com/viafield.
Neville Bergin (General Manager - Project Development) and Paul Richardson (Resident Manager) were on a 14 day educational tour of multiple fertilizer plants all over the United States and chose Viafield as one of their stops. The tour included a complete walk through of the location followed by a question and answer session.

Are Your Calves Ready For Cold Weather? Feed Update
When it’s cold outside, calves need more dietary energy just to maintain their body condition - not to mention continuing to grow and thrive. “Too often, during periods of cold stress, calves do not receive the amount of energy needed to fight environmental challenges and keep growing. Calves should not stop growing when the temperature drops,” says Dan Franzen, dairy feed nutritionist. “To help you counter the effects of cold weather on your calves, Viafield will have Cow’s Match® milk replacer and AMPLO-Calf® starter available in winter formulas to provide full potential nutrition to dairy calves AND help them face challenges associated with colder weather.” Cow’s Match ColdFront™ was develop by Land O’Lakes and Purina Animal Nutrition to deliver optimal nutrition during times of cold stress - whenever the temperature falls below 60 degrees for calves less than three weeks old and 42 degrees for calves older than 21 days. You can go to our website, www. viafield.com, to lean how Cow’s Match ColdFront provides energy while balancing fats and carbohydrates and the benefits of L-Carnitine. Simply said, it delivers what calves need in cold weather, increasing average daily gain by 7.3% in eight trials and 9.7% in the trials run in colder months. Developed to be used with Cow’s Match ColdFront, AMPLICalf Cool Weather Starter includes Propel® Energy Nugget, a highly digestible and palatable energy source, and AppetiteMAKER™, a patent-pending, proprietary additive proven to further stimulate higher feed intake of young dairy calves. Research confirms, calves fed AMPLI-Calf Cool Weather Starter during times of cold stress had increased feed intake, enhanced early weight gains and decreased antibiotic use. If your calves are already eating Cow’s Match Milk Replacer and AMPLI-Calf Starter as part of a Viafield full potential feeding program, you’ll automatically be switched to the cold weather formulas. If you aren’t on a full potential program and want to help your calves weather the cold, give Dan Franzen a call at 563-380-7473.

Energy requirement for maintenance increases 1% for every degree below 60 for calves under three weeks old. At an average daily temperature of 30 degrees, a calf will need 30% more energy just for maintenance, let alone growth. Adding a 3rd milk replacer feeding later in the evening will provide more nutrients, help warm calves, and increase their fluid intake. Feeding them later in the evening will provide adequate energy during the cold nights. Warm water should be provided at least twice a day and removed before freezing in cold weather. Cold stressed calves are more susceptible to diseases such as naval infections, calf scours and pneumonia. Work with your veterinarian to identify early symptoms and determine treatment protocols. Provide a deep bed of straw (about 5-6 inches) for the calves to nestle in to preserve body heat. If the calf’s legs are completely hidden while they are lying down, the bedding is deep enough. Calf jackets or blankets can also be used to keep calves warm and dry. Proper ventilation exchanges dirty inside air with fresh air, which is especially important at calf level. Without proper ventilation, excess moisture and ammonia build up can cause respiratory problems and permanent lung damage.
Safe Driving is the Key When Severe Weather Strikes
With winter quickly approaching, slowing down and being aware can make all the difference. Winter Weather Driving Maneuvers • Winter conditions call for different driving tactics. Ice and snow, take it slow - slower speed, slower acceleration, slower steering, and slower braking. • It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in adverse weather conditions, so use your brakes carefully. Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly, and NEVER slam on the brakes.
•
•
When driving in adverse road conditions, look farther ahead in traffic than you normally do. Actions by other vehicles will alert you to problems more quickly, and give you that split-second of extra time to react safely. Avoid using cruise control in winter driving conditions. You need to be in control of your vehicle accelerates - don’t let the cruise control make a bad decision for you.
•
•
Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots. These are all candidates for developing black ice - a thin coating of clear ice that forms on the pavement surface and may be difficult to see. Drivers should allow additional space between their vehicle and others sharing the road. Winter road conditions often result in longer stopping distance.

Winter is Right Around The Corner. Energy Update
As I’m writing this article, I can hear the combines busy rolling thru the fields harvesting the corn and beans for another, hopefully, bountiful harvest. The temperature today was around 70 degrees and things are looking great. Its hard to think about winter weather on a day like this, but we all know that it is coming, sooner or later, whether we’re ready or not. So… I would just like to take a minute and remind all of you about our Cenex WinterMaster Premium Diesel Fuel. WinterMaster Diesel is available from Viafield during the winter months and is an excellent choice for those of you that use diesel in the cold midwest winters. WinterMaster is pre-blended at the terminal to perform in temperatures as low as -30 degrees fahrenheit. You don’t need to blend in #1 diesel, just put WinterMaster in your tank and you are ready to go. If you’re on a monitored tank thru our AFD program, make sure you touch base with your Viafield Energy Specialist and we will let your tank of Roadmaster or Ruby FieldMaster get down towards empty, then fill it up with WinterMaster. WinterMaster is available in Clear Fuel for over- the- road or Dyed Fuel for agricultural use. Don’t worry if your not quite done with field work, getting WinterMaster in your tank and equipment before the cold temperatures set in, will have you ready to face another cold midwest winter.
