Wayne State has started 4-1 for the second consecutive year marking the first time since 1976-77 that WSU started back-to-back seasons at 4-1. This Saturday, the No. 22-ranked Warriors host Ashland for their annual Homecoming contest. WSU has won its last four Homecoming games since the Eagles claimed a 28-21 win in 2004 despite three touchdown runs by WSU’s Chris Middlebrooks. With a win in this Saturday’s contest, the 2009 Warriors would become the first team since 1976 to start the year 5-1. ¶ TIFFIN RECAP Wayne State scored a touchdown on three of its first four possessions, then blocked a Tiffin field goal with Stan Thornton going 73 yards for another score. The Warriors had the ball for over 11 minutes in the final quarter to run out the clock. Joique Bell, who became WSU’s all-time leader in rushing attempts (on his second TD run of the game), rushed for 175 yards including 145 in the first half. In his first collegiate start, redshirt freshman Mickey Mohner completed 7-of-14 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Both TD passes went to Troy Burrell, who set a career-high with 84 receiving yards. Bruno Shkreli and Josh Renel each rushed seven times in the second half for 40 and 38 yards, respectively. In addition to his blocked field goal return, Thornton had a 46-yard interception return setting up WSU’s second touchdown. It was his 12th career interception, which moved him into a tie-for-eighth all-time at WSU, while also placing him second in career interception return yards with 252. ¶ ON THE HEADSET Wayne State’s Paul Winters has a 25-33 mark in his sixth year with the Warriors. WSU is 12-4 in its last 16 games. The Warriors are 14-15 at home under Winters including a 7-2 mark in the last nine games at Adams Field. Ashland’s Lee Owens has compiled a 3822 record in his sixth year with the Eagles. ¶ ALL-TIME SERIES WSU trails the all-time series 19-5 which began in 1975. Ashland has won the last two meetings and four of the last five. ¶ SCOUTING ASHLAND The Eagles had their three-game winning streak snapped last Saturday by Hillsdale. Quarterback Billy Cundiff has completed 87-of-135 passes for 1,285 yards and 12 touchdowns with only one interception. D’Marris McCoy has rushed for 381 yards in four games. Marcus Council leads the AU defense with 36 tackles (22-14) including five for loss.
¶ STRICTLY BY THE NUMBERS For only the second time since 1995 (2008 was the other year), WSU has allowed 23 points or less in each of its first five games. Bell became WSU’s leader in career rushing attempts at 1,009. He also moved into second place on the WSU total offensive plays chart with 1,023. Hall of Fame quarterback Ed Skowneski (1972-75) has the school mark with 1,036. Thornton is in fifth place on the WSU alltime kickoff return yards list at 889. Bell moved into 17th place on the all-time NCAA Division II rushing yards list with 5,534 yards. He is 12th in all-time NCAA Division II scoring with 444 points, which ranks tied-for-23rd of all NCAA Divisions (I, I-AA, II and III) with Appalachian State’s Kevin Richardson (2004-07). He needs eight points to tie Texas’ Ricky Williams (199598) for 22nd place all-time. HEAD COACH PAUL WINTERS Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier announced the hiring of Paul Winters as the school’s 19th football coach in the program’s history on December 17, 2003. Winters became the first AfricanAmerican head football coach in GLIAC history when named to his current position. Winters earned GLIAC Coach of the Year accolades following the 2006 campaign, the first winning season by WSU in more than a decade, and then again in 2008 after the Warriors set a school record with seven conference wins. In 2005, the Warriors recorded their first home winning season since 1993 and last year had a 5-0 home mark until the regularseason finale against Grand Valley.
