Well Services Operators are critical to drilling and producing oil and gas wells. You assist with well service equipment and you get to learn the ropes of the industry at the same time.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma (or equivalent) is typically preferred. Basic mechanical skills are an asset. Employees must be able to pass a pre-employment physical assessment and drug test.

What does this career look like?

Licensing A Class 1 licence (with air brake endorsement) and a clean driving record are required.

From the onset, known as rigging up, to the completion of a well, or rigging down, you’re another set of hands involved in any number of specialized services. As a Cementing Helper you could be a member of a crew and assisting with checking and loading tools and equipment for high-pressure mixing and pumping systems to pump cements and fluids down into a well. You’ll begin your day by rigging in high-pressure steel piping from mounted equipment to the wellhead. You could also serve as a Wireline Operator Trainee and help the Wireline Operator lower equipment into a well for tasks such as fishing, bailing, swabbing, well logging or perforating. Or, maybe you help the Fracking Operator and learn how to perform preventative maintenance on stimulation equipment and inspections to ensure equipment is in safe and proper working condition.

What would I do? You help, you watch and you learn. You’ll be rigging up and rigging down, driving trucks with specialized equipment, and, perhaps even operating some of it. Generally you’ll be: 4 Assisting in the assembly of equipment and tools 4 Loading and unloading drill pipe 4 Performing pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections 4 Signalling drivers during loading and unloading
