MacDonald/facebook @rlmschool Dear Parents/Guardians: Jan. 18 2018 I hope everyone stayed safe and warm during the MLK weekend. Dr. King’s birthday was first celebrated as a national holiday in 1986 but it was not until 2000 that all fifty states recognized it and closed schools in observance of this special day. It is a chance to discuss with our children the ideals and contributions of this remarkable figure in our country’s history and to help them appreciate why they have a day off from school. We have talked about character traits of: acceptance, generosity, respect. All traits which people need to communicate successfully and make changes. This month we are discussing honesty. Our next traits will be kindness, creativity, fairness and perseverance. The traits apply to our history, making changes for the betterment of society and everyday living. These character traits are all being discussed through the year. Teachers are nominating children and we follow up with a monthly Pride Assembly. A FLURRY OF READERS: The children were bursting with excitement talking about their long weekend activities and about their increased reading. Our program A Flurry of Readers is going over well with our students. This week I have noticed many Snowflakes delivered to Mrs. Enos. We are so glad to know the children are turning off the television and computer for a while to do some old fashion reading! It seems they grabbed a comfy blanket and hot chocolate to warm up after playing outside and then had mom or dad read to them. Winter is a great time to read and with our Snowflakes grade level reading challenge, it's a great way to spend a cold winter day. It has been researched and proven that even 15-20 minutes a day of reading or reading aloud to children provides for significant growth in lifelong reading skills. Vocabulary knowledge is one of the biggest indicators for school success and ample reading opportunities build vocabulary understanding. All participating readers who read at least 3 hours over the next month will receive a reward. The grade that reads the most and creates the busiest snow flurry will receive a grand prize. It helps to make the program a little more challenging and a lot more exciting! Mrs. Enos, our Reading Specialist, will be sending updates on Flurry of Readers grade level reading challenge. Watch for the updates. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL: On January 9th, Tuesday, the Friends of the Library visited to distribute the winter Reading is Fundamental Books. Students were able to come to the cafeteria and choose a free book that they can keep. Students were very excited for this opportunity. Some even asked if they could have more than one! RIF’s goal is to instill a love of reading into our kids by providing free books and a fun activity three times a year. Our staff and the RIF team would like to thank our donors for all their support: Howard Trust, Bridgewater Savings Bank, WBPTO, Mrs. Stephanie Genuich, and the Friends of the Library. We would also like to thank our parent volunteers for their time and assistance during the distribution; Mrs. Carolyn DiMaggio, Mrs. Laura O’Neil, and Mrs. Evelyn Bandlow. We hope the students enjoy their new books! See you in May. If you are interested in being a volunteer, contact Laurie Polen [email protected] The last distribution will be Tues., May 1st. A small commitment reaps great rewards when we foster the love of reading. GRADE 2 - READ FOR 2018: Congratulations to Gr. 2 students. The “Read for 2018” was a success. The children read their favorite book, dressed in their pajamas and had a pizza party after they read. This event has become a wonderful tradition and celebrates reading and the New Year. I thank gr. 2 teachers for organizing the wonderful event. A special thank you to Mrs. Ann Marie Grinder, Food & Service Director, and her staff for the Papa Gino pizza party. CHARACTER TRAIT - HONESTY: As January comes to a close, we have had a lot of discussion about honesty. The dictionary definition of honesty - the quality of being fair and truthful. Teachers and children have been having discussions about this trait The assembly will take place on Wednesday, January 31st. To celebrate honesty - wear your Spirit Day WB t-shirt. We have completed the traits of acceptance, generosity & respect. SCHOOL CALENDAR AND SCHOOL START DATE - SEPTEMBER 2018: The School Committee voted to amend policy #101 "School Calendar", to start school before Labor Day. Therefore, in 2018 the start of school for students in grades 1-12 will be August 28th.

SNOW MOUNDS & PICK UP/DROP OFF: Although our snow mounds have disappeared we have learned a few lessons to be remembered in the event of another storm. When waiting in line for morning drop off and afternoon pick up on Steppingstone Drive, keep in mind that the drive is only meant for two way traffic. There is no third (middle) lane. We are working closely with Lucini’s Bus Company on the issue of the parents and bus drivers using the same entrance and exit. Mr. Will Lucini has instructed his drivers to enter and exit slowly. He has asked them to work within the flow of the traffic line to ensure safe and timely travel for everyone; especially during the winter months when the snow mounds make the driveway exceptionally narrow. BACK WALKING PATH - GOLDIE ROAD: Last week when we had an abundance of snow mounds, it was reported that drivers were parking on both sides of the street. This parking method, especially with mounds of snow, makes it nearly impossible for a bus driver to maneuver between the cars. Please be considerate and use caution when parking. We don’t want any bus accidents or any mirrors getting ripped off a car. WINTER 2017 ENRICHMENT PROGRAM: Registration is closed. Classes begin next week. All classess are from 3pm-4pm. Parents must pick up their children promptly at 4pm at the Bus Port or they are dismissed to Surround Care Program on advance request. Late pick-up more than twice may result in dismissal from the program. No refunds will be given after the second class. *Board Game Design - Art Room -Mon.- 1/22, 1/29, 02/05, 02/12, 02/26, 03/05 Kerryanne Cummins *Mermaids, Fairies & Dragons - Art Room - Tues. - 01/23, 01/30, 02/06, 02/13, 02/27, 03/06 Brittany (Churchill) Lorgeree *More Sculpture with Clay! - STEM - Tues. - 01/23, 01/30, 02/06, 02/13, 02/27, 03/06 Sandy Churchill *Pokemon 101 - Thurs. - Art Room - 01/25, 02/01, 02/08, 02/15, 03/01, 03/08 Kerryanne Cumminsl *Sew Fabulous - STEM - Fri. - 01/26, 02/02, 02/09, 02/16, 03/02, 03/09 Sandy Churchill
