AN EMERGING ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIP MODEL The “traditional” maximum NCAA Division I athletics scholarship covered a student-athlete’s tuition, fees, room, board and books. Effective in August 2015, however, NCAA legislation allowed the scholarship to expand to other, incidental expenses related to a student’s attendance at the institution. The new legislation covers the “gap” between the student-athlete’s traditional scholarship and the COA, as calculated by the university’s financial aid office pursuant to federal guidelines. A student’s COA is the estimated cost of completing one year (fall/spring) of full-time attendance at WIU. The COA is based on 30 hours of tuition and fees, double room and basic board, books and supplies, along with personal and miscellaneous expenses. Some students may have higher actual expenses such as transportation for trips home for out-of-state students or additional course fees. Several institutions in the Summit League and the Missouri Valley Football Conference have committed to providing COA in selected (or in some cases, all) sport programs. As Leatherneck Athletics moves forward and competes at a championship level, the need to strategically offer COA continues to grow. The charts below highlight the “gap” in scholarships that may be provided under this new scholarship model.
*Approximate Cost of Attendance for in-state WIU student during 2015-’16 academic year is $25,586.
* Approximate Cost of Attendance for out-of-state WIU student during 2015-’16 academic year is $29,988.
