18 May 2015 Dear Parents Internet Safety Information Sessions On 3 and 4 June we have invited North Yorkshire Police to attend the school to give presentations to the pupils on internet safety. On 3 June there will be two meetings offered for parents at 3.30pm and 6.30pm, lasting about an hour. We hope you will be able to attend one of these sessions. On 3 June children in Years 1-4 will be shown the Lee and Kim cartoon. Lee and Kim are brother and sister. They like playing on the internet together and their favourite game is Animal Magic - your child might enjoy similar sites such as Club Penguin or Moshi Monsters. Lee and Kim find themselves in a tricky situation and are helped by ‘Sid’ the super hero. Through Sid’s words of wisdom (and a catchy song!) they learn the importance of being nice to others online, not to share personal information and who to tell if they are worried. On 4 June children in Years 5-6 will be shown the Jigsaw VT and presentation. The film Jigsaw is a story about a young girl called Becky who likes to use social networking sites. She has her own profile where she shares information like the things she enjoys and photos of herself and her friends. Becky has been talking to somebody who she believes to be another child. It turns out to be a man who has lied to her. This 10 minute film shows that when you talk to people online and tell them too much about yourself, you might as well be inviting them through your front door. After playing Jigsaw, there will be a discussion with the children about what happened to Becky and how by taking some simple steps they can keep themselves safe online: • • • •

How to set their profile to private They should only talk to people they know and trust in the real world Who can support them – encourage to speak to parents or a trusted adult i.e. a teacher How to report anything that upsets them

Both of these are available for you to view on the CEOP U tube channel just search for Lee and Kim KS1 Film CEOP (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nMUbHuffO8) and/or Jigsaw 810 year olds CEOP (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=599I1E-rWTU). The children will be shown these films and take part in age appropriate discussions before and after to help them understand the risks thy face online and how to stay safe online. If you do not wish your child to attend these sessions then please inform the classteacher. We appreciate that this is a growing area of concern for many parents and we have therefore also invited North Yorkshire Police to deliver two parents presentations on 3 June at 3.30pm and 6.30pm in the school hall. The ‘Parents and Carers Guide to the Internet’ has been created by CEOP to provide a light hearted and realistic look at what it takes to be a better online parent. The show covers topics such as, talking to your child about the technologies they use and the things they might see. With interviews from leading experts such as, Professor Tanya Byron, Dr Linda Papadopoulos and Reg Bailey, as well as key industry players from Facebook, Club Penguin and Moshi Monsters, this online guide aims to equip you with the tools to have those tricky conversations with your children and keep your family safe online. The presentations will last up to an hour and will consist of ‘The Parents and Carers Guide to the Internet’ film, a presentation and open question and answer session. Please note that these presentations are not suitable for children but that there will be a teacher and classroom on hand to look after the children while you view the presentation. If you are not available to attend one of these presentations or indeed want to find out more information on internet safety for your children or yourselves then please go to the CEOP ‘Think You Know’ parents page @ https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/. Here you will find there are lots of useful resources and you can view the Parent and Carers Guide to the internet film that will be shown as part of the presentation. Yours sincerely J I Hartley Headteacher
