Westonka Activities Department Mission Statement The mission of the Westonka Activities Department is to engage students in athletic, arts and academic programs in an effort to instill and develop the core values of:

Teamwork (in activity, sport, school, district, and community) Leadership (responsibility, confidence, and commitment) Respect (for yourself, your competition, and others) Integrity (in every decision and action) Excellence (pride and achievement in all that we do) In line with Westonka’s “Small school advantages. Big school opportunities. Real-life success stories,” the department works to achieve its mission by providing competitive activities that: meet the diverse needs and interests of the student body, offer dynamic educational opportunities outside the classroom, promote lifelong learning and development, and create a positive atmosphere fostering meaningful relationships. White Hawks Football White Hawks Football Mission Statement Our mission is to develop quality men while playing the game of Football to WIN. The Westonka White Hawks Football program will strive to develop young men in the following three areas: 1. Develop Teamwork skills that will enhance their future.

2. Develop skills of individual student-athletes to handle adversity. 3. Build young men that are successful sons, fathers, and husbands.

White Hawks Football Fundamentals: • • • • •

Team Attitude Responsibility Work Ethic Excellence

• • • • •

Hope Faith Discipline Dedication Effort

…in the Classroom, on the Field, and in the Community.

F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Have FUN!

3.

White Hawks Parent Rules Parents/Guardians are as important to the success of our team as the players are. Coaches and Parents/Guardians must work together. Please keep the coaches informed about problems that may be going on with your child. Such as being sick, taking medication, or going through some emotional trauma. Parents/Guardians and Coaches must communicate with mutual respect. Communication is very important. Parents/Guardians should discuss all issues with their athlete first, and then contact the Coach David. Our staff has the intentions of providing the best possible experience for your football player, part of that is producing great results on Friday nights. There are many factors that come into play when starters are picked and deciding who will receive playing time, such as grades, attitude, effort, coachability, chemistry, and playing ability. If your football player is not getting the time you think he deserves, please have your player approach his position coach and Coach David to have the discussion about where he can improve in order to get more playing time.

DO NOTS: • No Parent/Guardian of any player should approach coaches before, during, or after a game to discuss an issue. Please contact Coach David to arrange a meeting time. • Parents should discuss ALL issues with their child before contacting Coach David or the Activities Director. Many times parents can work issues out just by talking your player through the situation. • After talking to your player, parents may request a meeting time to talk with Coach David. • If the issues have not been resolved, then the Activities Director will intervene. Inappropriate Concerns to Discuss with Coaches: • Playing Time • X’s & O’s and Team Strategy • Play Calling Appropriate Concerns to Discuss with Coaches: • The Treatment of your Child both Mentally and Physically • Ways to Help your Child Improve • Concerns about your Child’s Behavior

“8 Commandments” of a Perfect Parent 1.

Be positive with your son. Let him know it is a great accomplishment to simply be a part of the White Hawks football program.

2.

Do not offer excuses for why he is not playing. Encourage him to work hard and do his best at all times.

3.

Encourage your son to follow team and school rules. If we are going to truly be successful, your son must follow the rules.

4.

Insist on your son working to his ability academically as well as athletically. Remember the term is student-athlete and in that order for a reason.

5.

Do not develop envy toward other players. Do not live your life vicariously through your son. Football is a game – let them play it. Do not show animosity or jealousy for any of your sons teammates because they carry the ball more, score more touchdowns, or get more publicity. Who cares who scores or gets the publicity. The important thing is that every player on the team does his best and works toward a common goal.

6.

Insist on your sons respect for the game of football, the officials, and our opponents players and coaches. Instill in him the importance of sportsmanship. Make sure he understands how important it is to act “first class.” It takes years to develop a “first class” program, but it can take seconds to destroy it.

7.

Foster in your son a positive self-image. Do not compare and contrast your sons with former family members who played. Help him in any way possible to feel good about himself and his role in the White Hawks football family.

8.

Encourage your son to play the game of football for the love of the game. Winning will take care of itself. Postseason awards will take care of themselves. College scholarships will take care of themselves. Usually, good things happen to teams and individuals who are unselfish, hard working, and committed.

F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Team Policies and Procedures Players will be expected to abide by the following policies and team rules. Team rules are located in the Player Handbook which each player will receive on the first day of football practice in August. • • • • • •

Do nothing that would embarrass the team or ones teammates. Adhere to all MSHSL and ISD #277 polices. Attend class each and every day. Be on time for practices and games. Parents and Players must communicate directly to the Coach David regarding practice, meeting, or game conflicts. Follow ALL team rules distributed in your Player Handbook.

School Attendance: Students must be in attendance the entire school day in order to participate in an after-school activity. Likewise, students are not excused from classes the following morning when their co-curricular activities have evening games or performances. Exceptions to this policy are medical appointments, Funerals, and court appearances. Students or parents with questions regarding daily eligibility should contact the Activities Director or High School Principal. Injury Procedure: If a significant injury occurs during practice or during a game, Coach David will make an effort to contact you. If it is an emergency and we cannot contact you , we will get your son to a doctor. A trainer is present at all varsity games. The trainer can treat most non emergency situations. Illness Procedure: Incase of illness contact Coach David immediately.

F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Team Policies and Procedures Practice Polices: •

A player must be at practice/weights unless he is sick and not in school or excused by Coach David. Missing practice for a funeral, family emergency, medical appointments, or due to sickness that causes them to miss an entire day of school will not count towards these totals.

An injured or sick player must be at practice unless excused by Coach David.

In all situations a REMINDER will still be deployed in an effort to ensure consistency and equality.

If you are late and it is not excused ahead of time you will have a REMINDER after practice. If you are late and it is excused ahead of time you will have a REMINDER after practice. Once a player has missed practice 2 times for any reason, they will miss at least 1 half of game participation for each additional missed practice. If a player misses 3 practices for any reason, they will be suspended from the team until a meeting with Coach David and the player’s parents has occurred to discuss the player rejoining the team. Missing practice for a funeral, family emergency, medical appointments, or due to sickness that causes them to miss an entire day of school will not count towards these totals. A REMINDER is a term that is defined as an “opportunity to improve conditioning.”

F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Team Policies and Procedures Uniform Care: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

If possible, clean immediately after wearing or soak in cold water overnight. Shake off dried mud or rinse off wet mud before cleaning. AVOID EXCESSIVE HEAT while washing and drying. The mending of snags and rips after cleaning is always appreciated. DO NOT USE BLEACH!!!

Football Equipment: The football equipment your son wears is some of the best money can buy. The coaching staff individually fits each player. Your son is taught safe blocking and tackling techniques. He is constantly reminded to avoid leading with his head. Your son is responsible for the equipment issued to him. Players must pay for any unreturned or damaged equipment.

Nutrition: Pre Game: A good pre-game meal consists of carbohydrates and should be consumed Thursday or Wednesday before game time. Avoid proteins and sugars, as they are hard to digest. Pancakes, Pasta, Noodles, and Breads are good examples for a pre-game meal. Game Week: A good diet and plenty of rest are essential. The meal consumed the night before the game is also very important, if not the most important of the week. Drinking lots of fluids during the week and getting great sleep throughout the week is also very pivotal.

Philosophy Your child's success, or lack of success in football does NOT indicate what kind of parent you are. But having an

athlete that is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient, and tries their best IS a direct reflection of your parenting.

F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Philosophy

PREPARE the Child for the Path, NOT the Path for

the Child.
