THIS WEEKEND ON THE ICE THE GAMES - Wisconsin (12-13-3, 10-8-2 WCHA) hits the road for the first time since Jan. 18-19, traveling to Colorado College (18-8-2, 12-7-1 WCHA) to take on the red hot Tigers. CC is in the midst of a six-game unbeaten string and is 9-1-0 in its last 10 games. Five of the Tigers’ eight losses came in the first seven games of the season. These will be the 148th and 149th meetings in series history. Both games will be carried live on Fox Sports Net this weekend. LAST WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS - The Badgers split a home series with Alaska Anchorage, winning 5-4 on Friday night and losing 3-2 in Saturday’s tilt. Wisconsin tallied three times in the third period to come from behind to win the game. Sophomore defenseman Dan Boeser scored 1-3=4 in the victory. The Badgers fired 45 shots on goal, the most since Dec. 7 vs. North Dakota (47). On Saturday night, the UW trailed 1-0 after the first period, but took a 2-0 lead into the third period on back-to-back goals by Jake Heisler in the second period. UAA came-from-behind to score twice in the third period (1:16 a part) to claim the 32 win. The Tigers are coming off a home-and-home sweep with in-state rival Denver last weekend. CC is 13-3 at home this season.

NOTES DU JOUR IT DOESN’T GET ANY EASIER - The Badgers’ fight for an upper division finish and home ice for the first round of the playoffs will be a tough one. The six games to close out the month of February are all against teams above Wisconsin in the WCHA standings. In addition to playing at third-place Colorado College this weekend, the Badgers return home next weekend to host first-place Denver before traveling to Minnesota to end February in a two-game set at Mariucci Arena. The UW is just three points behind third-place Colorado College and Minnesota and three points ahead of sixth-place MSU, Mankato and four points in front of Alaska Anchorage. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH - Sophomore winger Rene Bourque has had no problem scoring against teams from the state of Colorado, especially vs. CC. Bourque has tallied a combined 9-3=12 against Denver and CC in his two years as a Badger. In fact, Bourque has scored 6-0=6 in six career games vs. the Tigers and has 3-3=6 in six games against Denver squads. SENIOR SPECIALISTS - Classmates Andy Wheeler and Matt Murray have combined to score 11 career shorthanded goals and 14 game-winning tallies. Wheeler has six career shorthanders and gamewinners, while Murray has been the deciding factor on eight occasions and scored five goals while shorthanded. 100 WINS – With their next victory over the Tigers, the Badgers will record the 100th series win over a Colorado College team. The most wins against any team. 60-19-6 – The combined record of the teams the Badgers play the rest of February is 60-19-6. Colorado College (18-8-2), Denver (23-5-0) and Minnesota (19-6-4) have a win percentage of 74.1 percent.

BEHIND THE BENCHES WISCONSIN COACH JEFF SAUER - Badger coach Jeff Sauer is in his fourth decade of collegiate head coaching this season and his 20th and final year at Wisconsin. Overall, he has a 651-526-56 record, ranking fourth on the NCAA Coaches all-time win list. At the UW, Sauer’s mark is 485-300-45. Not only is Sauer the WCHA’s winningest coach, his 31 years in the league are also the most of any coach in WCHA history. He is one of just two coaches currently in the league with two national titles (North Dakota’s Dean Blais is the other) and one of just eight coaches ever to win multiple national championships while in the WCHA. The other league coaches that have more than one national title are Murray Armstrong (5, Denver), Vic Heyliger (4, Michigan), Bob Johnson (3, Wisconsin), John MacInnes (3, Michigan Tech), Herb Brooks (3, Minnesota) and Gino Gasparini (3, North Dakota). His UW teams have made 12 NCAA appearances, including three Frozen Four showings and two national titles (1983, 1990). At the league level, Sauer has two regular-season titles (1990, 2000) and five WCHA playoff championships. COLORADO COLLEGE HEAD COACH SCOTT OWENS - Scott Owens (Colorado College, 1979) is in his third season as the head coach of the Tigers, with a record of 45-31-4. He is no stranger to the Tiger program after serving as an assistant coach under former head coach Brad Buetow from 1991-93 and now-Minnesota head coach Don Lucia from 1993-95. Prior to taking over at his alma mater, Owens was the head coach of the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) where he accumulated a mark fo 179-76-9 mark over four seasons (1995-99). In his last two seasons with the Bucs, Owens guided the team to a record of 115-30-3, including a national Junior A Championship in 1998 and USHL regular-season and playoff titles in 1999. As a player for the Tigers, he was a goaltender from 1975-79.

ODDS & ENDS WHO’s HOT: Senior Matt Murray has a five-game point-scoring string intact with 52=7 ... Murray had his four-game goal-scoring string snapped last Saturday night in the Badgers’ 3-2 loss to Alaska Anchorage (Murray had 0-2=2) ... Kent Davyduke has points in 10 of the 13 games he has played in since Dec. 1 ... in those games, the senior assistant captain has contributed 4-11=15, including four two-assist contests ... sophomore Jake Heisler registered his first multi-goal game last Saturday night vs. UAA ... he tallied both goals (within 28 seconds) in the 3-2 UW loss. BOESER’S BEST: Sophomore defenseman Dan Boeser recorded his first career four-point game last Friday night, registering 1-3=4 in the UW’s 5-4 win over UAA. On Saturday his was credited with an assist for his first five-point weekend at Wisconsin. The four-point game was the first by a Badger blueliner since Tim Rothering at Denver on Oct. 25, 1996. LOTS OF HISTORY: Badger head coach Jeff Sauer has many ties to Colorado College and its hockey program. Sauer played wing for the Tigers from 1962-65. Following his playing days, Sauer served as an assistant coach for CC under head coach Bob Johnson. In 1968, Sauer followed Johnson to Wisconsin where he served as the Badgers’ assistant, before returning to his alma mater as the head coach for 12 years (1971-82). UW goaltending coach Bill Howard also attended CC, playing in goal for the Tigers 1964-66. Colorado College head coach Scott Owens was an assistant coach at the UW during the 1991-92 campaign. IRON MEN: Ten players have seen action in all 28 games to date, including Dan Boeser, Brian Fahey, David Hukalo, Matt Hussey, Jon Krall, Alex Leavitt, Matt Murray, Rob Vega, Brad Winchester and Andy Wozniewski. Boeser has not missed a game as a Badger, continuing his 69 consecutive-games played string this weekend. Other players who have not missed a game in quite a while are: Matt Hussey (46 games), Matt Murray (71), Rob Vega (47) and Brad Winchester (86), who currently leads the Badgers in consecutive games played.

BADGER NOTEBOOK SAUER TO RETIRE FOLLOWING 2001-02 SEASON - Head coach Jeff Sauer announced earlier this month he would retire from coaching at the end of this season, ending another era of Wisconsin Hockey. Sauer, who succeeded the legendary Bob Johnson in 1982, has coached in the WCHA for 31 years and been the head of the Badger program for 20 seasons. He leaves as the WCHA’s (651 wins) and school’s (485) winningest coach and also as the fourth-winningest coach in college hockey history. BADGER OLYMPIANS - The Badgers have five representatives on Olympic teams that will compete in Salt Lake City in February ... on the U.S. team, three of seven defensemen are former Badgers (Chris Chelios, Brian Rafalski and Gary Suter) and goaltender Mike Richter makes his second appearance in the Winter Games ... for Team Canada, Curtis Joseph will also make his second appearance in goal for the Canadian Olympic team. Chelios will again captain the team, after serving as team captain for the 1998 U.S. Olympic squad. SHORTHANDED SNIPER - Captain Andy Wheeler, the only player in the WCHA with three shorthanded tallies in league play this season, ranks among the all-time Badger leaders in career shorthanded goals and man-down season tallies. Wheeler currently ranks tied for third (WCHA games) with five career shorthanded scores and is one of just six Badgers in school history to score five or more shorthanded goals against WCHA competition. On the season charts, Wheeler is tied for eighth all-time with his three shorthanders this season and tied for sixth for most SHG’s goals score vs. WCHA opponents in a season (3). HAPPY BIRTHDAY! - Badgers who have birthdays coming up this month include Matt Doman (Feb. 10, 22 years old) and John Eichelberger (Feb. 23, 21).
