WORK WELL NEWS January 2016

A Letter from The Coordinator I want to start out by thanking everyone who has signed on to the Wellness Center portal. As of the first of the year, we have

179 active members on the site. We are so excited to be starting the year off right with so many participating in the program! Great work! I would also like to thank you for all your patience. As we continue through 2016 with the program’s new technology, there will undoubtedly be more lessons learned. This technology is not only new to The Rasmussen Group, but we are also the first client of Wellmark’s to implement a results-oriented program based on Metabolic Syndrome risk factors. We are also the first client to implement their custom challenges. We are all learning as we go and I appreciate everyone’s positive attitudes and willingness to work through some of the kinks with me. Year one is always the toughest, but that only means year two will be even better! We are definitely ahead of the game in our industry when it comes to wellness, and that is something to be proud of. Lastly, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2016. With the new Work Well program in full swing, I hope everyone will utilize the tools and resources available to help improve their overall health. The Rasmussen Group not only strives to support employees and their families on their journey to an improved physical health, but also mental, emotional, and spiritual health as well. So, as we enter into the slow season, you may find more time to focus on your health, and I would like to remind all employees and spouses, my job as the Wellness Coordinator is not only to implement the program company-wide, but to also be a resource for employees. The scope of wellness is very broad, and therefore you and your families need to be able to find credible resources and advice on health topics across the board. That is what I am here for. Please feel free to shoot me an email, give me a call, or just stop in. My door is always open.

Be Well, Jessica

January is National Radon Action Month Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America, and claims the lives of roughly 21,000 Americans each year. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as the Surgeon General, urge all Americans to protect their health by testing the buildings in which they live in. January has been designated as National Radon Action month. This is especially important for Iowans; According to the EPA, Iowa has the highest average levels of radon in the nation. Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that forms from the breaking down of radioactive soil elements, such as uranium. Radon gas in the soil and rock can move into the air and underground water. It is normally found in very low levels in outdoor air and drinking water from rivers and lakes. It can be found at higher levels in the air in houses and other buildings. When radon breaks down in the air, it gives off a radiation that can damage the DNA inside the body’s cells and cause cancer. Although you can’t see, smell, or taste radon, it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. Radon enters a building through cracks in foundation, sump pumps, or spaces around pipes. Mitigation is a method used to combat this problem. This system reduces the amount of radon in a building by sucking the radon out of the soil underneath the house and releasing it above the rooftop before it has a chance to enter the home. The average installation cost of a radon mitigation system ranges from $800 to $1,200, and it must be done by a radon mitigation specialist. Luckily, it doesn’t take a professional to test for radon. Home testing kits are available at most hardware and home supply stores, and range in cost from $10 to $30. These kits can take from two to more than 90 days to complete testing. For ensured accuracy, state-licensed radon professionals can perform home checks for $100 to $150. Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family. Don’t Hibernate: Staying Active in the Cold Exercise should be incorporated into your routine– no matter what the weather. Regular workouts that fit your lifestyle will improve your mood, increase your energy level, and help you sleep better at night.

Winter Exercise Ideas: 1. Walk the mall: leave your wallet at home and use the mall as an indoor track. 2. Create a home gym: invest in some practical and easy to use exercise equipment, such as hand weights or stretch bands for resistance exercises. Use cans of food if you don’t want to buy weights– get creative! 3. Buy or rent an exercise DVD: borrow one from the library, or download exercise routines on the internet. 4. Everything counts: from vacuuming the house and other household chores to shoveling snow, many activities count toward being fit. Even if you don’t have a workout planned for the day, try to think of some way to be active.
