DRURY PANTHERS (5-0) vs. MISSOURI S & T MINERS (2-2) THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6 7:45 p.m. O’Reilly Family Event Center Radio: JOCK 98.7 FM TV: Mediacom Connections 22
ABOUT THE MATCHUP PANTHERS OPEN GLVC PLAY AGAINST MISSOURI S & T Drury will dive into Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday when the unbeaten Panthers take on Missouri Science and Technology in the league opener for both teams at the O’Reilly Family Event Center. Drury is seeking just its third 6-0 start since the program moved to the NCAA-II level in 1994-95 when it takes on the Miners, who are 2-2 on the season but opened some eyes with a 61-60 exhibition win at NCAA Division I Western Illinois last month, in which S & T erased a 19-point deficit. DU tuned up for the league opener by blasting NAIA-II unbeaten Central Christian 98-50 at The O’ on Saturday, with senior guard Alex Hall pacing six Panthers in double-figures with 22 points. Teddy Simniok added 14 points and four steals, Cameron Adams had 12 points, Derek Daniels 11 points and DU got 10 points each from Brandon Lockhart and Ian Carter in the blowout. SCOUTING THE MINERS Coach Jim Glash’s Miners are led by Mudi Eruteya, a 6-1 junior guard and transfer from South Suburban (Ill.) College who averages 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds wnile 6-4 senior Bryce Foster adds 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. Eruteya not only hit a last-second shot to beat Western Illinois in the exhibition game, but nailed a 30-footer at the final horn for a 77-74 win over Westminster in their most recent outing (Nov. 29). THE SERIES Drury leads it 27-5, including an 88-42 decision in Rolla and a 69-40 triumph at home in The O’ last season. The Panthers are 14-0 against S & T since both teams joined the GLVC in the 2005-06 season. ALSO ... Coach Steve Hesser’s Panthers started 6-0 in 2009-10 and 7-0 in 2007-08. ... Hall is tied with Chris Mortellaro for 11th on the all-time DU scoring charts with 1,582 points, and needs 16 points to match Tommy Deffebaugh (1,598 from 1981-85) and move into the Top 10 on the Drury list. ... Hall’s four 3-pointers on Saturday pushed him to 280 for his career and past current DU assistant coach Steven Gum (277) for second place on the career charts. Matt Miller, Drury’s current Executive Director for Athletic Affairs, holds the record with 351 from 1998-2002. ... The Panthers are No. 2 nationally in scoring margin (31.6 points) and assists per game (23.6) and No. 3 in FG percentage defense (.343) in official NCAA-II national stats released Tuesday. Hall is tied for first in FT percentage (100 percent), while Lockhart is second in steals per game (4.7) and sixth in assists (7.4 per game).
DRURY HEAD COACH STEVE HESSER Steve Hesser, now in his ninth season as the Drury men’s basketball head coach, has established the Panthers’ program as an annual contender for both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA-II honors. Hesser owns a 169-71 mark in his time at Drury, a .705 winning percentage that ranks among the top in the nation and in Drury’s storied basketball history. His Panthers have won 21 or more games in six of his eight seasons and won or shared four GLVC West titles in seven years as a league member. Drury has also qualified for the NCAA-II Tournament in five of his eight seasons. Hesser’s Panthers won the GLVC in 2007-08. His GLVC regular season record since the Panthers joined the prestigious 16-team league is 76-34 (.690 winning percentage). Hesser’s teams have been tremendous at home over the years as well, finishing with a six-year mark of 78-13 (.857) in the venerable Weiser Gym before going 26-4 combined over the previous two seasons in the new, 3,100-seat O’Reilly Family Event Center. Overall, Hesser’s DU squads are 105-17 at home (31-4 at The O’), 47-39 on the road, 50-13 in GLVC regular season home games and 36-29 on the GLVC road in seven seasons as a league member for the Panthers.
NEWS AND NOTES PANTHERS PICKED FOR SECOND IN GLVC WEST Drury was tabbed for a second-place finish in the West Division in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason poll of league coaches, just behind predicted favorite and defending division champ Missouri-St. Louis. UMSL’s Tritons received eight first-place votes and 113 total points, just ahead of Drury’s seven first-place votes and 110 points. Quincy received the remaining firstplace vote and finished third with 89 points, followed by Illinois-Springfield (69), Maryville (63), William Jewell (46), Missouri S & T (41) and Rockhurst (37). Bellarmine is the preseason East Division favorite, followed in order by Southern Indiana, Kentucky Wesleyan, Indianapolis, Lewis, Saint Joseph’s, Wisconsin-Parkside and league newcomer McKendree. DRURY QUICK FACTS
NEWS AND NOTES PANTHERS CONTINUE HOME DOMINANCE AT THE O’ After moving from one of the great traditional college basketball environments - the historic Weiser Gym - into the plush, 3,100-seat O’Reilly Family Event Center for the 2010-11 season, Drury’s tradition of taking care of business at home clearly has continued. Coach Hesser’s Panthers are 31-4 in The O’ since the move, including a 5-0 start this season. Drury will take an 11-game home winning streak into the Missouri S & T contest on December 6, with the Panthers’ last home loss coming to defending national champion Bellarmine (84-65) on January 12, 2012. DRURY IN THE NCAA STATS The first official NCAA-II national stats were released on Tuesday, and the Panthers - one of 28 remaining unbeaten D-II squads nationally - were prominent in the listings. The Panthers are No. 2 nationally in average margin of victory (31.6 points) and assists per game (23.6), No. 3 in FG percentage defense (.343) and seventh nationally in steals per game (12.8) and scoring defense (55.8 points allowed per game). Individually, Alex Hall (15 for 15, 100 percent) is tied for the national lead in free-throw percentage, while Brandon Lockhart ranks second nationally in steals per game (4.8) and sixth in assists per game (7.4). HALL LEAVING HIS MARK ON THE DU RECORD BOOKS Senior guard Alex Hall, an All-GLVC choice in each of his first three seasons as a Panther, continues to climb the DU all-time scoring charts. Hall enters the Missouri S & T game on Dec. 6 with 1,582 points - tied with Chris Mortellaro for 11th place on the list - and needs 16 points to catch Tom Deffebaugh (1,598 from 1981-85) and crack the Top 10 all-time for the illustrious Panthers’ basketball program. Lonnie Holmes is the all-time scoring king at Drury with 2,341 points from 1991 to 1995; Hall would need to get to the 1,920 points scored by James Bone from 1976-80 to crack the all-time Top 5 scorers at DU. Hall has scored in double-figures in 76 of his 93 career games played at DU, having a string of 16 consecutive games in doubledigits snapped with his nine-point effort against Arkansas Tech, when he scored all nine points at the FT line. It was just the second time in his 93 games that Hall had been held without a field goal in a game. He’s topped the 20-point barrier 32 times in his career and the 30-point mark four times, including a high of 36 as a freshman at Rockhurst and 30 this season in the opener against Southwest Baptist. Hall’s four 3-pointers in the Dec. 1 win over Central Christian also pushed him to 280 for his career and past current DU assistant coach Steven Gum (277) for second place on the career charts. Matt Miller, Drury’s current Executive Director for Athletic Affairs, holds the record with 351 made from 1998-2002. Hall, Miller, Gum and Tim Oetting all share the single-game record for treys in a contest with eight, with Hall having done it three times - all as a freshman, and against Southwest Baptist (11/16/09) and Central Christian (11/19/09) and Rockhurst (1/4/10). Hall has made five or more 3-pointers in a game a remarkable 16 times in his career, including a six-trey effort this season in Drury’s 73-44 shellacking of Southwest Baptist at The O’ in the Nov. 13 season-opener. LOCKHART EARNS GLVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR Senior point guard Brandon Lockhart, also a returning All-GLVC player, earned the league’s Player of the Week award for his phenomenal work as the Panthers went 2-0 in the Comfort Inn Drury Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 23-24 at The O’. Lockhart averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals, all while shooting 64 percent from the field. In a 87-57 victory over Central Oklahoma, Lockhart netted 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting (.714), made all three of his 3-point attempts, and dished seven assists to go along with a pair of rebounds and steals in just 21 minutes of play. The St. Louis, Mo., native was also a perfect 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. The next day, the Panthers throttled No. 19 Arkansas Tech 90-61 in the Classic to move to 4-0 on the season. Lockhart filled the stat sheet in the win, posting a career-high 12 assists to help four Panthers score in double digits in the win. In addition to his career-high assists mark, Drury’s floor general added nine points, six steals and six rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Lockhart also won the GLVC Player of the Week honor as a junior on December 12, 2011.
