Duke of Edinburgh Silver Letter
5th September 2017 Dear Parent/Carer Re: Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award I am writing to inform you of details of the Silver level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This is for students who have completed the qualifying Bronze expedition. The Silver Award is the next step in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. It uses the same structure as the Bronze Award, however the time scales for the different sections are longer. The expedition is three days of travelling with two nights camping, in an area that requires more advanced navigation than the Bronze expedition. The Volunteering section must be completed for 6 months and participants have the choice of completing either the Physical or Skills section for 6 months in addition to the remaining section being completed for 3 months. Students can enrol onto the Silver Award, once they have completed at least one of their Volunteering, Skill or Physical sections, but each section must be completed at the bronze level before it is started at silver. The activities to complete the different Silver sections can be a progression of the activities completed at Bronze, or a different activity. For example, if a participant volunteered with the Brownies at Bronze, they could continue volunteering and organising new activities for them for Silver. Alternatively, this participant could try something new and volunteer in a charity shop instead. Another example is if a participant studied for their Grade 2 Piano qualification, they could work towards their Grade 3 Piano qualification for their silver. The cost of the training and expeditions will be £250-300 + the £26 registration fee. This cost is dependent on the number of students who wish to take part in the Silver Award, as the cost is worked out per group, not per participant. Once I have a confirmed number of students, I will send out another letter with precise costs and details of how to pay on parent pay. The practice expedition will take place on 20th- 23rd October 2017 in the Ashdown Forest. The qualifying expedition will be 12th-15th April 2018. We have chosen these dates to reduce the impact on GCSEs. Regular training sessions will need to be attended, however the training will be less intense than that at Bronze, as the students already have a very good foundation from the Bronze training. We will try to work around GCSE intervention sessions as much as possible, to have minimal impact on students’ studies.

I understand that whilst all reasonable and professional care will be taken, training and expeditions do include some risk. I understand the expectations about student behaviour prior to the trip, and agree to meet the payment schedule detailed above. I understand that if necessary, my son/daughter may need to be collected during the weekend due to medical reasons and that there will be an adult available to collect them. During training, should the necessity arise, I agree to the person in charge of the party giving consent on my behalf for any urgent medical treatment to be given, including anaesthetic, as advised by a member of the medical profession.
