SCHEDULE/RESULTS

Dec. 9, 2009 • 7:30 p.m. (CST) Lantz Arena • Charleston, Ill. Radio: Hit Mix 88.9 FM / TV: WEIU - Mike Bradd & Jack Ashmore

GAME 8

Eastern Illinois returns home to face Western Michigan on Wednesday evening as the Broncos play the return game from last year’s ESPNU Bracketbuster contest in Kalamazoo. EIU comes into the game at 4-3 overall after a weekend road split to open Ohio Valley Conference play. The Panthers won a three overtime game at Tennessee State on Thursday before suffering a road loss at Austin Peay on Saturday. Western Michigan enters at 2-3 overall but the Broncos have not played since Dec. 1 when they lost 76-70 against Temple.

EIU-WESTERN MICHIGAN SERIES

This will be the fourth meeting between Eastern Illinois and Western Michigan. The Broncos hold a slim 2-1 series advantage but EIU picked up a 59-57 win last February 21 in Kalamazoo. Prior to that the last time the two schools had met on the hardwood was a two game series in 1993 and 1994. WMU won at Lantz Arena, 77-74, on Dec. 30, 1993.

SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN

The Broncos are off to a 2-3 start to the season with both wins coming at home. Their last action was on Dec. 1 in a 76-70 loss to Temple. David Kool is the team’s leading scorer at 21 points per game. Both Kool and Martelle McLemore have let it fly from 3-point range this season with Kool shooting 7-of-26 and McLemore shooting 9-of-23.

AGAINST THE MAC

Eastern Illinois will be playing its second game of the season against an opponent from the Mid-American Conference. EIU knocked off MAC member Toledo in the season opener. This will be the eighth time that EIU head coach Mike Miller has faced a member of the MAC since taking over the program in 2005. EIU is 2-5 in those previous games but is riding a two-game win streak against the MAC. INSIDE THE NUMBERS

PANTHERS FINISH ROAD SWING WITH A SPLIT Eastern Illinois fell to 1-1 on the season in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Panthers dropped the back end of their opening conference swing at Austin Peay. Coming off a three overtime contest at Tennessee State on Thursday night, EIU was cold from the floor in the opening half shooting only 34 percent including 40 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the free throw line. The Panthers were led by Tyler Laser with 14 points as he hit only 4-of-9 from the floor. The Governors built a ten point halftime lead before winning 73-60.

LASER IN DOUBLE DIGITS AGAIN Junior guard Tyler Laser hit in double figure scoring for the sixth straight game on Saturday night at Austin Peay as he led the Panthers with 14 points. Laser currently leads the Panthers at 16.1 points per game which ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference. The only game Laser has not reached double figure scoring in was the season opener at Toledo in which he finished with nine points. Laser ranks 10th in the OVC with 12 made 3-pointers and has 97 3-pointers made in his career.

CISSE MOVES TO 11TH IN REBOUNDS / 9th IN BLOCKS On Thursday at Tennessee State Ousmane Cisse became just the 12th player in EIU school history to pull down 600 or more rebounds for his career. On Saturday he collected four more rebounds to move his career total to 610 and pass Ricky Robinson (1979-82) for 11th place on the EIU career list. Cisse is now chasing Lloyd Ludwig (1954-57) for 10th place with Ludwig having 636 career rebounds. Cisse is currently second on the Panthers team in rebounds at 4.3 per game with freshman Shaun Pratl leading the squad at 4.4. Cisse also moved up one spot on the career blocks list at Austin Peay as he was credited with two blocked shots giving him 52 for his career. With two more blocks he would catch Derek Kelly (1990-93) for 8th place. MULTIPLE PEOPLE COLLECTING ASSISTS Eastern Illinois has been running balanced offense this season as four players have collected 15 or more assists early in the season. Tyler Laser is the team leader with 19 assists which ranks 14th in the OVC. Trailing slightly behind Laser with 15 assists each are Jeremy Granger, T.J. Marion and Curry McKinney. The three guards with 15 assists each all have a positive assist-to-turnover ratio with McKinney sporting the best margin at 2.1-to-1 assist to turnover ratio. So far this season six different players have finished as team assists leader in a game with Laser and McKinney each having a season-high five against Eureka College. LOGGING THE MINUTES Over the weekend Eastern Illinois played nearly two and a half games as the Panthers went triple overtime against Tennessee State for a win before losing in regulation to Austin Peay. In the TSU game senior Edin Suljic played the third most minutes in a contest for a Panther logging 52 minutes. The record is 55 minutes by Tony Hemphill in the four overtime loss to Northern Iowa in 1988. Jay Taylor played 53 minutes in that contest. Despite his 52 minute effort Suljic ranks just third in minutes played this year at 26.6. Tyler Laser (32.7) and Jeremy Granger (32.1) are the team leaders and only players averaging more than 30 minutes a contest. MARTIN TO MISS 4-6 WEEKS Senior guard Romain Martin will miss four to six weeks of the season following a minor procedure on his knee that was performed on Nov. 18, 2009. Martin has been EIU’s leading scorer the past three seasons and entered this year ranked No. 24 all time in career scoring with 1,123 points. Last year Martin averaged 15.4 points per game earning second team All-OVC honors. GO HARD - J.M. This season EIU will be wearing a patch on their jerseys that says Go Hard - J.M., in honor of women’s basketball assistant coach Jackie Moore who passed away on November 4, 2009. Moore was entering her third year on the EIU staff.

The All-Century team includes Andy Sullivan (1942-46), Tom Katsimpalis (1949-52), John Milholland (1956-58), Charlie Thomas (1975-78), Craig DeWitt (1977-80), Jon Collins (1983-86), Kevin Duckworth (1983-86), Jay Taylor (1986-89), Kyle Hill (1998-2001) and Henry Domercant (2000-03). The six teams honored included the 1952 NAIA team, 1957 NAIA team, 1976 NCAA Division II team, 1978 NCAA Division II team, 1992 NCAA Division I team and 2001 NCAA Division I team.

PANTHERS ON TV

Eastern Illinois will make a minimum of two regular season appearances on national television this season with both games being televised from Lantz Arena. EIU will appear on ESPNU on Jan. 9 against Southeast Missouri and again on Feb. 11 against Morehead State. A third contest could come should the Panthers earn a televised contest as part of the ESPNU Bracketbusters competition. This will mark the fifth straight season that EIU has played at least one game on ESPNU. In 2007 the Panthers hosted SEMO on ESPNU and Samford on ESPN2. EIU is 2-2 in previous ESPNU appearances.
