THE OPENING TIP The Panther men’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 season at Northwestern on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on the Big Ten Network. Jay Spoonhour enters his second year at the helm of the program after leading the Panthers to an 11-21 overall record a year ago. EIU returns three starters from last year’s team that advanced to the OVC Tournament for the first time since 2010. Northwestern is led by first-year head coach Chris Collins who joined the Wildcats following a 13-year stint on the coaching staff at Duke. The Wildcats return three starters and seven letterwinners from a squad that posted a 13-19 overall record a year ago. After playing the Wildcats, the Panthers return home to face Olivet Nazarene (Nov. 13) before traveling to Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 16) and Purdue (Nov. 20). SERIES HISTORY WITH NORTHWESTERN Northwestern defeated EIU, 87-72, in the only meeting between the two schools on Dec. 18, 2011. Then-freshman Josh Piper is the only Panther remaining on the team who saw action in the contest. He went 0-for-3 from the floor with one rebound and one assist in 10 minutes of action off the bench. PANTHERS IN SEASON OPENERS The Panthers are 16-16 since the 1981-82 season in season openers, their first year of Division I basketball. EIU is 4-14 when playing on the road in season openers. The Panthers have dropped three consecutive season openers and are looking for their first season-opening win since a 72-62 victory at Toledo on Nov. 14, 2009. EXHIBITION WIN OVER OAKLAND CITY The Panthers picked up a 73-64 exhibition win over Oakland City on Nov. 7 in the squad’s lone preseason exhibition. EIU used a balanced offense as 10 players scored in the victory, led by Josh Piper’s 15 points. Sherman Blanford added a double-double as the senior forward scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. Reggie Smith chipped in 11 points and a game-high five assists while Alex Austin went 4-for-7 from the floor with 10 points to round out the double-figure scoring for the Panthers. EIU finished the night going 25-for-61 from the floor and 17-for-27 from the foul line.
