GAME 3 Eastern Illinois will play its home opener on Saturday night hosting in-state rival Western Illinois. The Panthers opened with two games on the road falling at No. 15 Indiana on Nov. 13 and at Ball State on Monday. It was the first time since the 2006-07 season that EIU opened a season with two or more games on the road. Western Illinois comes into the game at 3-0, their best start since the 1989-90 season. This will be the first game of a home and home series between the two schools. EIU returns to Macomb on Dec. 12. RILEY LEADS PANTHERS Junior college transfer A.J. Riley has stepped right in this season for the Panthers leading EIU in scoring in the first two games. At No. 15 Indiana Riley scored 13 points going 6-of-6 at the free throw line. On Monday at Ball State he continued to produce finishing with 21 points. Riley again got to the free throw line finishing 6-of-8 at the stripe. In the Panthers lone exhibition game against Saint Francis, the Peoria, Ill., product had 13 points with a 3-for-3 night on free throws. PANTHERS GET TO THE LINE Eastern Illinois was able to get to the free throw and convert at Ball State going 19of-27 at the line. Trae Anderson scored eight of his 20 points at the free throw line going 8-of-11. A.J. Riley was 6-of-8 with Patrick Muldoon and Cornell Johnston also scoring at the free throw line. In the season opener at No. 15 Indiana EIU made 19 trips to the free throw line knocking down 11. For the season EIU is shooting 65.2 percent from the line. Last year EIU shot 65.2 percent as a team.

EASTERN ILLINOIS HEAD COACH JAY SPOONHOUR Jay Spoonhour enters his fourth season as the Panthers head coach having been hired on April 9, 2012. Spoonhour was previously the head coach at Moberly Area Community College where he coached for three seasons. He is a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in 1994. He was an honorable mention All-Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour’s career mark is 146-89; 46-61 at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is 40-57 with an OVC mark of 22-26. Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a 97-91 win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Eastern Illinois was held to 29 percent shooting in the second half as Ball State expanded a four-point halftime lead into a 73-56 win. EIU led early in the first half as Trae Anderson scored 20 points. The Panthers were led in the second half by A.J. Riley who finished with 21 points, the second straight game the junior college transfer has led EIU in scoring. SCOUTING WESTERN ILLINOIS Western Illinois is coached by Billy Wright in his second season in Macomb. The Leathernecks are off to a 3-0 start including a season opening win over last year’s NCAA runner-up Wisconsin. J.C. Fuller is WIU’s leading scorer with 17.3 points per game while Garret Covington and Jabari Sandifer both average in double figures. As a team Western Illinois is shooting 52.1 percent from the floor this season including 59.5 percent from 3-point range. SERIES INFORMATION This will be the 156th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois with the Leathernecks currently holding a 78-77 all-time series lead. WIU has won three straight games in the series including a 60-32 win in Macomb in December of 2013, the last time the two schools played. EIU’s last win in the series was 61-58 on Dec. 11, 2010 in Lantz Arena. The first meeting in the series was in 1928. EIU will pay a return visit to Western Illinois season on Dec. 12.

• Eastern Illinois first two opponents this season have been able to use rebounding to their advantage with a 41-9 second chance points margin. Those points have come as EIU is one of five teams in the nation with a negative 20 or higher rebounding margin. The Panthers closed the gap on Monday against Ball State pulling down 32 rebounds after being limited to 17 rebounds in the season opener at Indiana. • Eastern Illinois had two players score 20 or more points on Monday at Ball State as A.J. Riley scored 21 and Trae Anderson finished with 20. The last time EIU had two players with 20 or more points was in the OVC Tournament opening round as Chris Olivier and Cornell Johnston both had over 20 points to lead the Panthers over SIU Edwardsville last March. • Eastern Illinois has started two freshmen this season in the games at Indiana and Ball State. Patrick Muldoon and Casey Teson have both earned the starts for EIU. Muldoon scored four points in both games while pulling down five rebounds at Ball State. Teson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers at Indiana but was held scoreless at Ball State. EIU has six freshmen players on its roster. • Trae Anderson scored 20 points on Monday at Ball State to give the senior wing his 23rd career double figure scoring game. Anderson has now scored in double figures in eight straight games dating back to last season. It was his fourth career 20-point game. • Guard Cornell Johnston had four assists on Monday against Ball State after two assists in the opener at Indiana. Johnston set the school freshman record for assists last season with 156 which also ranked sixth on the EIU single season assist list. Johnston was third in the OVC in assists per game last season at 4.7 per contest. • Eastern Illinois picked up its first block of the season on Monday at Ball State as Trae Anderson swatted away two shots. Last season EIU was second in the OVC with 4.3 blocks per game. Senior Luke Piotrowski is 11th on the EIU career list with 57 blocks. ONE OF THE NEWEST ROSTERS IN THE NCAA Eastern Illinois opened the season with one of the newest rosters in the NCAA. The Panthers are tied for seventh in the nation with the most newcomers on the roster entering year. EIU has nine new faces with six freshmen, two junior college transfers and one four-year transfer. Portland State, Tennessee State and Bradley lead the nation with 11 newcomers on their rosters for this season. PANTHERS SIGN KANSAS ALL-STATE GUARD Eastern Illinois men’s basketball signed one player during the early signing period last Wednesday with Kansas All-State guard Logan Koch. Koch averaged 14.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists last year at Mill Valley HS in Shawnee, Kan.
