One size US H-8 (5 mm), or size to obtain gauge. Stitch markers. Yarn needle. Sewing needle and matching thread (optional).

GAUGE In single crochet, using US size H-8 (5 mm) hook, 14 sts and 18 rows = 4"/10 cm.

INSTRUCTIONS EMBROIDERY STITCHES USED Blanket Stitch Chain Stitch Cross Stitch Feather Stitch Fly Stitch Herringbone Stitch Lazy Daisy Stitch Smyrna Cross Star Filling Stitch Straight Stitch NOTES 1) Starting chain for colors (on charts) for each panel is made by reading from left to right across Row 1 of charts. Then when Row 1 is worked, from right to left, you will be working on the right side of the panel. The next row will be Row 2. Do this on all the panels at the beginning. 2) Read through all the instructions before starting. 3) To change color work last stitch of old color to last yarn over, yarn over with new color and pull through all loops on hook to complete stitch. HELPFUL 1) Place stitch markers at the top of each panel to mark the top and right side. This will help in lining up the panels to be sewn together. 2) Embroider each panel when it is completed, do not sew panels together before embroidering. PANEL ONE With H-8 (5 mm) hook and D, ch 20; change to C and ch 21. Row 1 (RS): With C, sc in second ch from hook and in next 19 ch; change to D, sc in last 20 ch across, turn – 20 sc in C, and 20 sc in D. Row 2 (WS): With D, ch 1, sc in first 20 sc; change to C, sc in next 20 sc, turn. Continue working rows, changing color according to Chart 1. Place a marker in top of RS. PANEL TWO With H-8 (5 mm) hook and A, ch 15; change to B and ch 3; change to D and ch 23. Row 1 (RS): With D, sc in second ch from hook and in next 21 ch; change to B, sc in next 3 ch; change to A, sc in last 15 ch across, turn – 21 sc in D, 3 sc in B, and 15 sc in A. Row 2 (WS): With A, ch 1, sc in first 15 sc; change to B, sc in next 3 sc; change to D, sc in last 22 sc, turn. Continue working rows, changing color according to Chart 2. Place a marker in top of RS. PANEL THREE With H-8 (5 mm) hook and E, ch 7; change to F and ch 14; change to D and ch 20.

Row 1 (RS): With D, sc in second ch from hook and in next 18 ch; change to F, sc in next 14 ch; change to E, sc in last 7 ch across, turn – 19 sc in D, 14 sc in F, and 7 sc in E. Row 2 (WS): With E, sc in first 7 sc; change to F, sc in next 14 sc; change to D, sc in last 19 sc, turn. Continue working rows, changing color according to Chart 3. Place a marker in top of RS. PANEL FOUR With H-8 (5 mm) hook and C, ch 22; change to D and ch 14; change to E and ch 5. Row 1 (RS): With E, sc in second ch from hook and in next 3 ch; change to D, sc in next 14 ch; change to C, sc in last 22 ch across, turn – 4 sc in E, 14 sc in D, and 22 sc in C. Row 2 (WS): With C, sc in first 22 sc; change to D, sc in next 14 sc; change to E, sc in last 4 sc, turn. Continue working rows, changing color according to Chart 4. Place a marker in top of RS. EMBROIDERY Embroider panels as desired. Embroider, using any design you wish, along lines where colors change. Embroider flowers and other embellishments in the center of some blocks of color. Arrange panels in numerical order, with right sides facing up and markers at top of panels, and long edges together. Sew panels together using overlap stitch and colors that match colors of blocks. Add more embroidery along joining seams, if desired. FINISHING Border Join A in edge of afghan. Round 1: Ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around edges of afghan, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Rounds 2–5: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner sc; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Block afghan to measurements, spray with water and let dry.
