EWGA Golf Tip-Sway vs. Slide Many golfers have heard the use of the term “sway” and “slide.” Each term describes a different inefficient move in the golf swing. The sway derives from a lack of proper weight shift in the backswing. The slide is an improper weight shift in the forward swing. Often times players will avoid shifting their weight in order to avoid a swaying motion, or will shift their weight incorrectly to cause a sway. The definition of a sway motion is when the hip bone moves outside of the ankle bone. It is possible to shift weight to the back foot without swaying to get there. The weight shift is an integral part to hitting the ball further, so learning how to do so is imperative for increased distance. Practice the lower body move without a golf club. Place your hands on your hips and rotate into a full backswing. Focus on the pressure being on the inside portion of the back foot. This will ensure that you have rotated correctly. Watch yourself in front of a mirror and practice the feeling of moving the weight to the back foot. Once you master the weight shift without a club, add the motion of the arms and the torso to complete the ultimate weight shift.
