News and Notes

In July, we sadly bid farewell to Envoys Jon and Madeline Soza, pastors of our Liberty Pole Way Corps, who now manage the Ithaca Corps.

We welcome Envoy Andrew Ferreira who previously served in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. Envoy Andrew’s personal philosophy is to accept and serve people unconditionally, as Christ would. Good luck to all the of icers in their new roles! Congratulations to Daisy Rivera Algarin, who is celebrating her 10th anniversary as a Salvation Army Advisory Board member, on receiving the 28th Annual “W” Award from the Rochester Women’s Network. The “W” Daisy Rivera Algarin Award recognizes a local woman who goes above and beyond to help other women succeed in their professional and personal lives. As founder of Latinas Unidas, the only Hispanic women’s networking organization in the city, Daisy has inspired many women to exceed expectations and achieve their goals.

You Gave to Me & Now I Give Back to Others Jeremiah Jordan‐Ferguson is a student at RIT and a great example of why supporting The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester’s programs for youth are so important. He started attending The Salvation Army Church almost a decade ago and has been participating in programs for youth since he joined the teen group when he was only twelve. Through that group, Jeremiah made friends and did service projects, like painting kettles. “I enjoyed it,” says Jeremiah, “and my mom knew I was in a safe, protected environment.”

Jeremiah tells his story

Jeremiah attended Salvation Army overnight camps, irst, as a camper, and later as a counselor. Now he volunteers with the Kids Adventure Program at Northwest. “I want to give kids the same experience that I had,” says Jeremiah, “learning and having fun in a safe place, with caring counselors and of icers to guide them.”

“I liked how The Salvation Army accepts everyone, no matter what their background or circumstance,” he explains. Thanks to Jeremiah and those like him, these programs continue to be meaningful to the kids who are involved today.

On behalf of Jeremiah, his fellow counselors and all of the kids who bene it from Salvation Army Programs – we thank you for your support!

A Christmas Angel in July

As a local business owner and a Salvation Army Advisory Board Member, Tom DeMott, is no stranger to hearing about the needs of others in our community. Instead of sitting back and watching as others helped those in need, Tom chose to give back this summer in a big way. Deciding that no one should go without the simple pleasures so many of us take for granted, he contacted Lynn Mulvey, Director of Development and Christina Barnwell, Hope House Program Manager about putting together a picnic for the women of Hope House and their children. The Salvation Army Program Managers were recruited and happy to pitch in. Serving as this year's “Christmas in July elves,” in addition to Christina, were Nate Gutschow from Genesis House and Lamonze Hunter from Booth Haven. Tom wasn’t only going to provide the hot dogs and burgers either; he joined in the celebration with the staff and residents of the shelter. He also brought a Christian magician to entertain the children of the shelter’s residents and invited the participants in the Kids Adventure Program, our eight‐week summer children’s program, to share in the fun. In addition, Tom is working with Zaretsky Associates, a national-award winning landscape design-build firm, on a plan to beautify the Hope House grounds. Thank you, Tom, for having such a big heart for our ladies!
