ORANGE LOSE TWO GAMES IN MICHIGAN TO TWO OF THE SPORT’S GIANTS The field hockey team is 1-4 on the season after beating Pacific, 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 6, and losing its two games last weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Orange lost to host Michigan (4-0) on Sept. 10, and a 3-1 decision to perennial power Old Dominion on Sept. 12. Both opponents reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season. The Wolverines were national semifinalists in 2003.

WAGNER PLAYS EVERY MINUTE IN GOAL FOR SU Senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) played every minute in the cage for SU during the past three games. She recorded one save against Pacific, 13 saves against Michigan and seven saves against Old Dominion. After four games played this season, Wagner is the owner of a .773 save percentage and a 2.46 goals against average.

LOMBARD NETS FIRST GOAL OF THE SEASON AGAINST ODU Junior back Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) netted her first goal of the season early in the second half against Old Dominion. It came off a rebound. Lombard pulled SU to within 3-1 of the Monarchs with about 30 minutes left in the game. It was her 14th career tally.

Joanne Lombard

SOPHOMORE RYAN REGISTERS GAME-WINNING GOAL AGAINST PACIFIC

Senior midfielder Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./ Granby Memorial) still leads the Orange in scoring with four points (one goal, two assists). Sophomore forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) had a goal and an assist, including the game-winning goal just 4:02 into overtime, to give SU its first win of the season, 2-1, against Pacific at Coyne Field.

FRY NOTCHES FIRST GOAL OF SEASON AGAINST PACIFIC

Meg Ryan Sophomore forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley HS) took a crossing pass from Ryan early in the second half and dodged Kim Myers, Pacific’s diving goalkeeper who came out to challenge. It was Fry’s first goal of the season and second of her career.

GETTEL EARNS GAME-WINNING ASSIST AGAINST PACIFIC In overtime, both teams turned the ball over before SU senior forward Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./ Tulpehocken HS) used her ball-control skills to weave up the right sideline, past a couple of defenders. She delivered a centering pass right to Ryan’s stick. It was Ryan’s first goal of the season and second of her career.

BIG EAST OPENER UP NEXT The Orange open BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Rutgers for a 7:30 p.m. contest. On Sunday, Sept. 19, SU is at Hofstra. 2

ORANGE SPLITS TWO GAMES The Orange went 1-1 last week with a 2-1 victory at Cornell on Sept. 8 and a 1-0 loss to eighth-ranked Boston College on Sept. 11. Syracuse now stands at 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the BIG EAST. The victory versus the Big Red was SU’s third straight, and fifth in the last six meetings, versus Cornell. Saturday’s shutout loss to the Eagles was the first for Syracuse at home since a 2-0 defeat by Virginia Tech on Sept. 29, 2001.

ROWLEY NETS SECOND OF ROOKIE CAMPAIGN Syracuse freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) notched his team-best second goal of the season against Cornell. Rowley also leads the team with four points. Rowley has started the last three games since coming off the bench in the opener. Only two freshmen have led SU in scoring outright since 1995 - Jeff Knittel in 1995 and Kirk Johnson in 2000.

COLLINGS ADDS ANOTHER POINT Freshman forward Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y./Oriskany) registered his first career assist on the game-winning goal at Cornell. It was the first assist of the season for the Orange after three unassisted tallies to start the season. Collings is second on the team in scoring with three points on a goal and an assist. Collings has started all four games for the Orange so far in his rookie campaign. Isaac Collings

EVANS PUTS UPPERCLASSMEN ON THE BOARD Junior forward Jeff Evans (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) notched his first goal of the season, scoring the game-winner against Cornell. It was his second career game-winning goal (vs. Colgate 2003). Evans loves to play against the Big Red. In three career games versus Cornell, Evans has two goals and three assists for seven points. Evans now has five goals, three assists and 13 points in 31 career games. He was the first Syracuse upperclassman to score a goal this season following two goals by freshman Pete Rowley and a score by rookie Isaac Collings.

SCHEER EARNS WIN IN GOAL AT CORNELL

Jeff Evans

Junior goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) made four saves in the Orange’s win at Cornell to earn his third career victory. Scheer’s last win prior to Wednesday was a 4-0 combined shutout of the Big Red last season. The junior has started the last three games and posted eightsaves with a 1.33 goals against average. Scheer has played in nine games during his career, making six starts. He has 18 saves and a 1.49 goals against average.

ROOKIE TRIO BECOMING FIXTURES IN FIRST ELEVEN Three Syracuse freshmen have started all four games of the 2004 season. Redshirt freshman Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y./Oriskany), and true freshmen James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) and Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, B.C./Abbotsford Mariners) are three of the six players that have started every game for the Orange. Collings, a forward, is second on the team in scoring with three points (one goal, one assist). Goodwin has started every game in the midfield, while Peetoom has been a mainstay on defense.

ORANGE SNAPS ROAD WINLESS STREAK Syracuse’s 2-1 victory at Cornell ended a streak of 10 consecutive games away from home without a win. The Orange went 0-8-2 in road or neutral games during that stretch. Prior to Wednesday, SU’s last road victory also came at Cornell, a 2-1 win on Oct. 30, 2002.

SU CONTINUES SUCCESS WHEN SCORING MULTIPLE GOALS The two-goal effort against Cornell upped the Oranges’s record since the start of the 1999 season to 35-72 when scoring at least twice. Last season the Orange went 3-1-1 when scoring multiple goals. The only loss was to Pittsburgh, 3-2, in the season finale. In that same span, the Orange is 4-36-8 when scoring zero or one goal in a game. Syracuse has won 17 consecutive games when scoring at least three goals. The squad’s last loss when registering three-or-more goals was a 5-4 overtime game at #11 Georgetown on Oct. 18, 1998.

SU IN ONE-GOAL GAMES All four of Syracuse games this season, and six straight games dating back to last season, have been decided by one goal. Syracuse is 2-4 in that stretch. The Orange won its first one-goal game of the season, defeating Cornell, 2-1, on Sept. 8. In the last five years, Syracuse is 21-22 in games decided by one goal. Last season, the Orange went 2-5 in one-goal contests.

ORANGE TIES THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN The Syracuse University women’s soccer team moved to 3-0-1 Friday afternoon with a 1-1 tie against Michigan at the Michigan Classic Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. Syracuse senior captain Sarah Elnicky (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) scored the game’s equalizer with less than 25 minutes left in regulation. The goal was Elnicky’s first on the season and the second of the defender’s career. SU lost its first game this season, 1-0, to Oakland University Saturday at the Michigan Classic. The Orange is 3-1-1 on the season. Syracuse out-shot the Grizzlies 13-7 and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net.

MYERS MOVES UP IN SU RECORD BOOKS

Sarah Elnicky

Senior goalkeeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) recorded seven saves at the Michigan Classic and moved into second place on SU’s all-time saves list with 170. Myers needs 40 saves to take over first place on the all-time list. Myers is also third at SU in career shutouts with 12. She needs one more to move into a tie for second

SU PLAYED MICHIGAN AND OAKLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME

Shannon Myers

This weekend’s meetings with the Wolverines and Grizzlies were the first-ever for the Orange. Michigan and Oakland went to the NCAA Tournament last season and Syracuse played both teams tough in Ann Arbor, Mich, coming away with a tie and 1-0 loss.

UP NEXT … The Orange opens the BIG EAST schedule Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. as it hosts St. John’s. SU also hosts #2 Notre Dame on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.

SYRACUSE SWEEPS BIG ORANGE TOURNAMENT The SU volleyball team won all four of its matches in the Big Orange Tournament over the weekend. On Friday, Syracuse defeated Cleveland State in three games and Manhattan 3-1. On Saturday, the Orange defeated Siena 3-0, and was victorious against New Hampshire in a four-game battle.

WHAT A TURNAROUND A YEAR MAKES SU has captured wins against three teams who defeated the Orange last season, Cleveland State, Manhattan and New Hampshire. The Orange lost to Cleveland State, 3-0, and this year was able to sweep the Vikings. Manhattan earned a 3-2 win in 2003, but it was Syracuse who captured the 3-1 win this year. New Hampshire had defeated SU 3-1 last season, and the opposite was true in 2004.

SERVING SENSATIONS Junior Kelly Duan (Baotou City, China/Zhong Shan Univ.) and freshmen Jen Malcom (Schaller, Iowa/Schaller-Crestland HS) and Joscie Kaup (Ft. Recovery, Ohio/Fort Recovery HS) have been the top-three servers for the Orange this season. Duan leads the team with 16 aces, an average of 0.64 aces per game. Malcom is second on the team with 12 aces for an average of 0.55, and Kaup has 10 aces.

JONES SETS NEW CAREER-BESTS

Jen Malcom

MCQUILLIN TAKES CHARGE AT THE NET Morgan Jones
