SYRACUSE LOSES TO TWO OPPONENTS RANKED IN THE TOP 10 The Orange faced two teams ranked in the national Top 10 last week. On Friday, Oct. 22, SU traveled to Storrs, Conn. and lost a 3-0 decision to No. 7-ranked Connecticut. On Sunday, Oct. 24, the Orange lost a 2-1 overtime decision to No. 8-ranked American at Coyne Field. Syracuse, who entered the week ranked No. 20 in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, honored its eight seniors on Senior Day against American. Unfortunately, the loss against the Eagles was SU’s third consecutive setback and it dropped the team’s record to 10-8 on the season.
WAGNER RECORDS CAREER-HIGH 15 SAVES VERSUS EAGLES
Betsy Wagner
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) had a career-high 15 saves against American on Oct. 24. She stopped 11 of the Eagles’ 14 shots in the first half alone. Against Connecticut on Oct. 22, she had seven saves. Wagner, a second-year starter, is in the midst of her most productive season yet. She has 119 saves on the season and is the owner of a 1.51 goals against average. Last season, Wagner allowed (on average) slightly more than two goals per game. For her career, Wagner now has 234 saves to her credit.
MCKAY TALLIES A GOAL ON SENIOR DAY Senior midfielder and team co-captain Leah McKay (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) registered SU’s lone goal against American. It was her second goal of the season and fourth of her career.
ORANGE CLINCH SPOT IN 2004 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP, SET TO HOST THIS YEAR’S TOURNAMENT
Leah McKay
Syracuse earned the No. 2 seed in the 2004 BIG EAST Conference Championship thanks to a 3-2 league record this season and a 5-0 Providence win against Villanova on Oct. 24. If the Wildcats had defeated the Friars, then Syracuse, Boston College and Villanova all would have been tied for second place with 3-2 records. However, since SU defeated then No. 9-ranked Boston College, 2-1 in double overtime at Coyne Field back on Sept. 26, the Orange will host No. 3 BC at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5 in the second semifinal game. The first semifinal pits No. 1 Connecticut, the league’s regularseason champion, against either Villanova or Providence at 5 p.m. Providence can work its way into the championship field if it can beat the Huskies in its final regular-season game on Oct. 30. Coyne Field will be the site of all the action, including Sunday’s 12 p.m. championship game. SU head coach Kathleen Parker, now in her 27th season, has guided the Orange to 15 of 16 appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament, including 14 straight trips from 1989-2002.

SU KEEPS BIG EAST HOPES ALIVE WITH PAIR OF VICTORIES Syracuse won its first two BIG EAST games of the season, defeating Rutgers, 2-0, and Providence, 1-0, in the final home games of 2004. SU snapped a seven-game losing streak and is now 4-10-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the BIG EAST. The Orange’s six points (three points for a victory, one for a tie) in conference play are just four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot held by Connecticut.
BIG WEEK FOR JUNIOR GOALKEEPER Junior goalkeeper Alim Karim (West Hill, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) recorded backto-back shutouts for the third time in his career, blanking Rutgers and Providence. It was the first time the Orange had consecutive shutouts in league play since defeating topranked Connecticut, 1-0, and Providence, 2-0, in 2000. Karim made five saves for the week. He is now tied for sixth place on the Orange’s career saves ledger with 174. For the season, Karim has 20 saves, a 1.09 goals against average and two shutouts in seven games.
EVANS NETS SECOND GAME WINNER
Alim Karim
Junior forward Jeff Evans (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored his second game-winning goal of 2004 with SU’s first goal in the 2-0 win versus Rutgers. Both of his goals this season have been game-winners. He also scored in SU’s 2-1 win at Cornell. Evans has played in 35 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season. He played the last four games of 2002, all 17 games last season and 14 straight games in 2004. It is the longest active streak on the Orange. Evans has six goals, four assists and 16 points during his streak. This season, he is SU’s leading scorer with two goals, an assist and five points. Jeff Evans
PRENDERGAST SCORES FIRST OF SU CAREER
Junior defender Ezra Prendergast (Kingston, Jamaica/Globe Institute of Technology (N.Y.)) picked a great time to score his first goal in an SU uniform. In the 77th minute of play against Providence, he hit a header off a corner kick to score the game’s only goal. Prendergast has been a fixture in the SU lineup this season, starting 13 of the Orange’s 14 games. He has been mainly a defender, helping Syracuse to three shutouts and a team goals agaisnt average of 1.05.
GOODWIN AND McCALLION NET FIRST CAREER ASSISTS Junior tri-captain Mike McCallion (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and freshman James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) each earned their first career assists on game-winning goals last week. McCallion scored his first career point with an assist on Jeff Evans’ goal against Rutgers, while Goodiwn hit a corner kick that Ezra Prendergast headed in for the game’s only goal against Providence. Goodwin is the fifth SU freshman to score at least one point for the Orange this season. He is one of three freshman to start all 14 games for SU. McCallion is playing in his first season as a forward after spending most of his first two seasons on defense and in the midfield.
ONE-GOAL GAME STREAK ENDS Syracuse’s 2-0 victory against Rutgers snapped a string of 14 consecutive games that were decided by one goal. SU went 3-11 in those games. It was the first two-goal win for the Orange since defeating Cornell, 4-0, on Oct. 22, 2003.
UP NEXT … The Orange will try to keep its postseason hopes alive with two key BIG EAST games on the road. SU faces Connecticut on Oct. 27. The Huskies currently occupy the final playoff spot. Syracuse travels to Villanova on Oct. 30. The Wildcats are currently in fifth place and battling for a home game in the quarterfinal round. 4
EIGHT SYRACUSE SWIMMERS REACH BIG EAST QUALIFYING TIMES AT SONNY WERBLIN INVITATIONAL Eight Syracuse University swimmers achieved BIG EAST Conference “A” qualifying times at the Sonny Werblin Invitational hosted by Rutgers University on Oct. 22-23. He surpassed BIG EAST qualifying times in the men’s 100 (53.19) and 200 (1: 54.90) backstrokes and won both races.
ROOKIE MAASKE OFF TO FAST START Freshman Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) continued to impress as she was faster than the conference standards in four events. FIRST-YEAR PHENOMS Freshmen Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla./Lourdes Academy) and Erin Homewood (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) had strong performances at the Rutgers Invitational. Duenas was third in the women’s 400 individual medley with a time of 4:31.43 and fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2: 09.89. Both times guarantee her a spot at the conference championship meet later on this season. Homewood was right behind Duenas and Maaske in the 400 individual medley with a sixth-place finish and a time of 4:37.79. She was fourth in the women’s 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:35.40.
