SOLIDS CONTROL TECHNICIAN #MudControlTechnician Solids control is a technique used on a drilling rig to separate the solids produced by crushed drill bits and other debris from drilling fluids or mud. You’re a Solids Control Technician, but some days, you’re part electrician, part millwright, part chemist, and part customer service representative. You wear many hats, all required to support drillers to be able to reuse drilling fluids.

What does this career look like? You either operate or you train field workers to operate specialized equipment to separate out particles, debris and other solids crushed by a drill and carried to the surface. Each stage of the separation process removes finer and finer solid particles until the drilling fluid or mud can be reused. It begins with the shale shaker, which can remove up to 75% of solids. The fluid journeys through a sand trap or shaker tank to a centrifuge feed pump. The centrifuge is where your expertise can really pay off. You might work for a service company where you’re called to different well sites to train employees on this piece of equipment or to install, operate or troubleshoot issues with the centrifuge yourself. Rigs have different conditions – different ground formations, drilling muds, shakers, styles of drill bits and drilling programs. You get satisfaction in being able to find the perfect combination of chemicals and machine calibrations to ensure the most efficient removal of solids from the drilling fluid or mud.
