WASTEWATER TECHNICIAN #EnvironmentalSystemOperator #WaterTreatmentOperator Removing impurities from the water used in oil and gas operations is a key part of the industry’s efforts to recycle and resuse as much water as possible. You use your knowledge of chemistry and the workings of a highly sophisticated treatment plant to make that happen. You enjoy combining technology and a focus on problem solving to return water back to its purer state.
What does this career look like? You might work in a plant at a worker camp, treating sewage waste or transforming well water into potable drinking water. Or, you might work at a facility that removes dissolved and suspended solids, chemicals, salts and other impurities from water used in drilling or mining operations. Filters, centrifuges and neutralizing chemicals are all at the root of what helps transform wastewater. Much of your day involves monitoring. Using a touch screen tablet and physically patrolling the plant, you’ll monitor pressures, temperatures, process levels and flows. Your day is a whirlpool of gauges, meters and recording instruments. As part of a team, you challenge yourselves to reach new levels in water purity. You tweak processes, such as a good pump to get cleaner results. Or, you perhaps discover there’s a better ratio of solids to water in a biological tank.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma (or equivalent) is typically required, in addition to any relevant water and wastewater operator certification. There are five certification levels for water and wastewater system operators and the size of the treatment plant typically dictates the level of operator required. Employees must pass a preemployment physical assessment and a drug test. Licensing Some jobs may require a Class 5 driver’s licence and a clean driving record.
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Standard and emergency first aid • H2S Alive
What would I do? You spend your day with computerized control systems and related equipment in wastewater, sewage treatment and liquid waste plants. You may use your knowledge of chemistry to take chemical samples and tests to ensure you’re meeting certain guidelines. If you’re filtering well water for drinking, you test it for iron and manganese. You may work at an on-site lab or send samples off-site for analysis. Specifically, this role could include: 4 Analyzing test results from wastewater samples and instrument readings 4 Adding chemicals, such as ammonia, chlorine or lime, to the wastewater system to disinfect and deodorize water 4 Attending safety and daily tailgate meetings
